Could The 2003 Boxster S Have...
As much as 290 HP? There is a rumor afloat that claims the Boxster S will have a Non Turbo 3.4 motor with 290 HP.
Has anyone else heard this rumor?

I heard that rumor, and talked to a salesman today who confirmed it as 285 hp in the 2003 S.
However, I heard another one today claiming that the breakdown will be:
2.7 - 230 hp
S (3.2) - 260 hp
3.4 - 290
The assumption being that there will be another model that's a step above the S. Possibly called the RS.
Of course, I'd assume you've got better info on these kinds of things than I do Bill.

What about the rumoured Boxster Turbo? Both MB and BMW are upping the stakes in the euro roadster segment with 330 - 350 hp models. Autoweek claimed that a Boxster Turbo was in the works w/ 350 or so HP.
Sure would be fun!!!

Guys,
In the latest issue of "Christophorus"(sp), it was mentioned that the new Boxter S would have a 3.4L engine and produce ~300hp. In the same article the 996 was mentioned to be going up to 3.6 from 3.4 and should produce >320hp. The article also mentioned a 'hardtop' Boxster i.e. non convertible to compete with the M Coupe. Still doesn't mean that Porsche will do it but I just thought you would like to know.

Oh that would be so nice...
I'm tired of the people who don't even consider the 986, because it's underpowered, and softly sprung. But so nicely balanced, great feel, and I like the looks too.
I've only driven a Boxter S, turn in, and brakes were impressive. Exaust note good, feel good, etc. But a 300+hp boxter would definately kick some rear

Guys,
The new 996 is in the shops here in Switzerland and Germany, well officially this week I am told. We will have to wait and see. 3.6L with 320HP. Major press over the last couple of weeks across the german speaking world for its release. I video taped some of it but don´t tell anyone. In PAL I am afraid, no good for the USA. The Targa with same engine and output but with Daimler-Chrysler sliding roof system comes out in September this year. Cannot get anything concrete on the new Boxster for 2003. PAG are being somewhat tight lipped about this,
Ciao,

I think the 2003 boxter S probably will go to a 3.4L. Porsche has probably been watching the aftermarket tuners stuff 3.4L engines into boxters for some time. It is the next logical step imo - even if they have to "detune" it slightly to keep it behind the 996. Good for us.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this how Porsche managed to kill off the 944. First they added a couple of extra models at higher prices and then eventually only had very expensive models available meaning there was no point in having the car at all.
The Boxster is going very well due to the lower price tag on such a nice car. I don't think it would go so well if you bring that up or close the 911 price.
This is the way I see it. Don't hesitate in saying I'm wrong about this.
Sam.

I totally agree. With the introduction of the new M's, AMG Slk, 400+ hp <$50k vettes, etc. the boxster needs a major horsepower increase WITHOUT a price increase. If they dont' do this they DESERVE to loose alot of sales. As it is it basically costs more than all those listed (granted base price is lower than some but by the time you option it equivalently it's more) and lags behind in the horsepower department to the tune of 75-100. That's getting outrageous.

I forgot what issue of Porsche Excellence magazine this was in but they said that at the Zuffenhaus plant there have been sightings of cars with some weird scoops. on the internet, they said 2 prototypes were spied on. 1 with a single turbo, the other with twin...who knows what Porsche has up their sleeves, but if a Boxster Turbo comes into the game of cards. You can count on it being the winning hand among the S2000, Z8, Modena Spider and the Audi TT

Reading the description of the new Nissan 350Z in Road and Track makes me wonder if this will pressure Porsche to add more horsepower per dollar in Boxster. The new Z is slated for 280-285 HP V6 at around 3100 pounds for a proposed price of $29,000. Their stated target performance is Boxster 'S'. Should be interesting to see what happens.

my sense is that w/ the slowing economy and new car introductions, there will be a new sweetspot in the $30k range developing.(remember when 928 ws $80k and lexus came out w/ the SC400 - germany said japan was pricing below cost).
IMHO, the $40k entry is now too high, especially w/ so many quality used cars available for less money and still cov'd by mfgr warranty....perhaps this is also why there was talk of the boxster hardtop my guess is $34k, though i don't think it'll do that well. remember the 924S?
personally, i just don't see how someone can justify $60k for nicely equipped 2002 boxster S w/ 250hp when you can get a low mileage 2000 fully loaded for $45k or a 1999 996 cab for $50kish. or if you have to have new, get a 2001 996 Cab for $12k off sticker.
