Post 3.4 Engine conversion site started

I have started to put up a site regarding my experieince in getting a 3.4 engine installed in my Boxster.

The site in a work in process but if you want to go take a look here it is:

<a href="http://dlewis1340.home.mchsi.com/" target="_blank">http://dlewis1340.home.mchsi.com/</a>

I am working on a few missing pictures and hope to have some dyno info up there soon.

Dave

FANTASTIC time slip for the 400m
Congratulations

I embarked on a 3.4 conversion, but a change of plans saw the car and motor sold.
I am back into an 03 S atm.
With those 400m times you are upsetting me

I put your times into the calculator, and worked backwards.
Assuming the standard 996 motor was 221kw,
it is now producing 239kw !
IMPRESSIVE

cheers

Q,

Thanks. At the time I started my conversio you had your 3.4 and non-S boxster and were ready to get started. Then that Speedster came along if I remember correctly and your plans changed.

Can you share the calculation you used with me? How about metric to us std conversion.

Best of luck with your S. Great car, love the speedster humps and logo on the deck and NO cats you fortunate guy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Cheers,

Dave

Wow congratulations on the car!

Like Q, I saw the 1/4 mile time and I was like WOW!!!

Too bad I already have an S to pursue this. Maybe a 996 Turbo motor swap if possible? :-)

Great car.. congrats again. Keep updating that site for more of your mods and keep us posted.

aaaah yes, the speedster
I have just bought a matching 356 coupe to go with it.
Its about ready to be restored

Thanks, glad you like the look of the Boxster

Can you clarify one thing for me ....did FVD use the 3.4 intake manifold, or the 2.5 manifold on your car ?

here is a screen capture of the calculator.
it even shows HP for you
<img src="http://www.qplanet.org/q/post/34_400m.jpg" alt=" - " />
- weight is car + driver = 2976 lb
- HP is flywheel hp
- 0-100 = 0-62mph ....and is always a little optimistic
- 400m & mph are generally spot on

to qualify the accuracy of the calc,
here is its estimate for my 2.5 boxster and the actual timeslip.
<img src="http://www.qplanet.org/images/auto/performancecalcm.jpg" alt=" - " />
<img src="http://www.qplanet.org/images/auto/timeslip15m.jpg" alt=" - " />
larger version <a href="http://www.qplanet.org/images/auto/timeslip15l.jpg" target="_blank"> HERE </a>

its within 0.1 sec and 1mph

nice turbo engine, but will it fit? If it does, that will be super fast.

the trusty calculator says a 996TT powered Boxster would run
11.94@113.8mph ! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

So, from what I am gathering here, the play is to sell our late model Boxster and 's's . Find a cheap high mileage early vintage (none 's')model with a good body . Toss a 3.4 in and for less total $$ outlay wind up with a great looking rocket.
What does a 3.4 conversion cost?

Now that you have the 3.4 in your boxster, you could add an aftermarket turbo to it right? Have you thought about replacing some of the parts with lighter ones like carbon fiber doors and ect? I thought I saw a carbon fiber boxster hood for $500 on e-bay just yesterday. It would be sweet to see some personalized plates that read
0260in3 LOL. Anyways good luck, sweet car.

Roy,

I don't know the situation for everyone but I'd imagine if you already own a late model or an S and have to sell it I doubt the numbers will work out so there is less outlay. However, if you can find a good deal on a 2.5 it is a good option to look at.

Cost depends on where you get motor & who does work. I'd expect to spend between 18 and 25 k.
18k for a slightly used motor and minimal upgrades, I was around 25 k for a new 3.4 and cams, Motronic, Headers, Cats installed at FVD.

3.4's are selling for 6-9k used on ebay. To keep things easier electronically you want to stay pre-egas 3.4's so I think that you want pre 01 3.4 litres only.

Bad side of this is that IF you would ever want to sell the car when your done it will not be easy to get your price out of it without finding an educated buyer who knows and values the work specifically.

Frost,

I'd be worried about adding turbos with lowering the compression ratio. Besides I have already spent all that I am going to on the car and turbos would be another hugh chunk of $ to get them done right. It would be a complete screamer though. This months Excellence has an article on a 3.2 turbo bosxter with the varible geometry vane turbos from Aerocharger. It is a good read.

Thanks.

yeah I read that article and although it falls short of claimed "GT2 performance", it's still a rocket. Too bad they didn't come out with any metrics.. acceleration, handling, etc.

It would've been interesting to see how much diff. it is from regular 911TT with lighter weight and no AWD.

saying "GT2 performance" is a lot to backup. yes, article was light on specs and they had boost pressure issues. It was interesting to read how high they got the boost and the engine kept together.

Also have to keep in mind the 996tt is a 3.6 and has some serious factory works, this boxster was a 3.2 I believe.

A solid 3.6 tt boxster would be the ticket. I'd want some WIDE rear tires on that.

cheers
