3-360's?!!!! And on dry pavement too boot. That is impressive. I usually have a hard time getting one in! You might have a future in stunt driving if you could repeat that trick!

it sounds more like we should be getting you into a 996 GT2 than a boxster. How does that sound?

Well like I said 70 was my last observed speed. I have to agree I must have been way faster than that. So since you all guessed the trip....dont know how unless it is what up newbees drive, then how fast would you estimate I was really going. I know I looked at the oncomming traffic three times not counting my last rearview mirror shot before banging away from the now smoke filled freeway. It was exciting as hell though and I fly a small airplane.

turboflyer,

I reccomend some DE's and autox's. I think you will be amazed at how much of a better driver you can become.

Must have been something on the pavement in order for you not to feel the car beginning to let go...plus the fact that there were 3 360's thrown in for good measure...holy cow, either that or you were running slicks covered in oil....

did you suddenly let off the gas AND brake mid corner?

I've done 4 spins in my non-PSM Boxster, all on the track at Willow Springs and Buttonwillow. 2 180s and 1 360, and 1 1080. I drove each time except the 1080, when an instructor was driving and went way far off the line and too fast at Bus Stop at Buttonwillow, and we went off the track and spun in the dirt. Spectators told me we did 3 revolutions; all I could see and taste was dirt flying.

Car has 17" P Zeros which have plenty of tread, but felt slippery when pushing it.

Before all of this, one instructor/veteran DE and autoX driver told me that Boxster handles great, but if you lose it it spins like a top due to mid engine. Boy was he right.

I agree with Yarin. A simple yet fun autocross or High Perf Driving clinc will put you in touch with your car (whatever it is)and its capabilities. I have a 01 2.7 boxster and have found that the front end is the key to the feel of the onset of a spin. When you are running hard and the front starts to push the tendancy is to lift a bit as opposed to steering or tracking out to alleviate the pressure. This sensation is more dramatic if your front tires are just a few pounds low. Driving a HP car fast in a corner on the street does not allow fow a correction and or a track out. You are forced to stay in your lane thus the reaching of your limit of adhesion very quickly. The only thing you can do is lift or brake or... run into the trees or off the the off ramp. I drove a DE at VIR this spring in the pouring rain on sport cups and lap by lap learned where the pressure points/limits where and how the car felt. There is no substitute for the track or auto cross. Please.. support your local porsche club and come out an play.

Took a used 97 Boxster out for a test drive a while back, and on a wide quiet mountain switchback, took a 180 degree 20 mph turn at 35 that I know well and sure enough - the back end started coming around.

Steered into the spin, gave it a bit more throttle, and no response. Luckily it was a wide 3 lane curve with nothing to hit on either side, but nevertheless, it was very dissapointing to spin around with nothing I could do but hang on for the ride. Ended up spinning onto the gravel apron on the other side of the road, and no damage.

It was a clear dry day, consistent blacktop, on a turn that I have taken many times at far greater speeds. Needless to say, my wife was not impressed - we were thinking of the car for her!

Stock 16" rims and worn P Zero's on the car - no idea of pressure, but a walk around before I drove it seemed that all was in order.
