I am looking to buy a used 97 to 99 boxster here in san jose/san francisco area. Most are around 23k to 27k. are there big differences between 97 to 98? are these cars reliable? any suggestions?

I have a 1997 and live in San Jose. 1998 got side air bags but not much else was changed. I have the 1997-2002 tech intro booklets that tell you what changes were made each year. Let me know if you need help.
There is also a Bay Area Boxster group. <a href="http://www.babblers.org/board.htm" target="_blank">Babblers</a>

1997-1999 all had the same 2.5 liter motor. I have a January 1997 with 47k miles. Only been in the shop twice in 4 years as I do my own work. Some 2.5 had the porous block or slipped sleeve problems but they show up early and Porsche replaced the motors.
As I said 1998 got side air bags. 18" wheels were approved for 1998 but not 1997. Other than that and a few minor changes 1997 is the same as 1998.
Some 1997-1999 had problems with the top operation but we learned how to fix them. Very early 1997 that were made prior to January 1997 did not have the outside temp display unless the car had the trip computer option.

I think the latest Excellence magazine has a buyers guide for Boxster and 996 models. That might help answer some of your questions.
I've not heard of problems with the tiptronic transmission in any of the Pcars. They've been making it since 1990, so I would imagine it's a well sorted out trans.
