Smile Soon to be Porsche owner again..help me decide!!

Hello everyone! This is my first post here and I'm excited about finally finding a GREAT Porsche board with what seems to be some very helpful individuals. Ok...heres my story. I purchased a 1985.5 porsche in 95.First car as I've always been a Porsche nut! Got it for under 3K at an FBI auction. Babied it and did all the maintainence needed at home with fathers help(man those rubber center clutches are a pain to replace!) Had 75,000 miles in '95 and was at 168,000 in 2000 when a jerk in a new Cadillac T-boned me at an intersection. He smacked my front fender and mashed my wheel inward snapping my suspension. Needless to say his frontend was hanging off and all that "appeared" to be wrong with mine was a small dent in the fender, and the crooked wheel. Of course insurance issued me a check instead or repairing the costly damage. They gave me $6500 which I was very happy to get although I was heart broken to lose my baby. Anyway after buying an economical Accord I was ready to save money for a while and do the college thing. Now I own a home, have a beutiful daughter, bought a '69 Chevy truck for hauling and am set to once again own the absolute best car in the world!! I was dead set on a 1986-89 944 turbo as I do love the 944's. Then I've driven a few 911sc's and early carreras and started to get those in my blood. Then, i realized I could move out of the eighties and have a more "current" model at a resonable price such as a '97-98 Boxster. My thing is I need to be able to do "some" maintainence on my car and I was worried about access the engine(after researching some older post here I realize you can do most maintaining with ease.) I'm far from wealthy and cannot deal with having a dealer perform all my work, not only that but the one time I took the 944 to one they royaly screwed me! Sorry so long but just wanted to let everyone know a little about me and again I'm thrilled to have found this group!!

If it makes you feel better I have a 1997 so the factory warranty expired in 1999. In the next 4 years it has been at the dealer once. For the airbag light fix and ignition switch recall - no charge. I take care of it myself. It is just like any other car except it takes a few minutes to access the engine unlike other cars - but that is b/c it is a mid engine. The 914/6 is much harder to work on, as were the 2 Fiat X/19s I had. Any questions, just email me. Jeff

Hi I am glad that you are able to own a Porsche once again, they are great cars. I own a 1986 Porsche 944 and do the work with my friend on my car and on my friends 87 944. I also have a friend who owns a boxster, a 968, 944 turbo, 928, as well as a friend with a 930. The advice that I have for you is this buy the newest and best maintained Porsche that you can afford, preferably one under warrantee!! I work on my car all the time it is old and things tent to break or wear. From what I have seen the newer the Porsche the less the maintenance. True that is not always true, but that is what I have seen My friend with the boxster changes his oil and that is it, where as his 928 is a lot of work. In the end I will always say get the newest and best maintained Porsche you can afford, and i am not the only one who says this Excellence magazine says the same thing. I hope that this will help. Good luck (and remember any Porsche is better then no Porsche)
