GeoffD, I agree with your assessment. As mentioned earlier, the position of the Boxster now and in the future is more a function of it's hierarchical position in the Porsche family. Think about it, the Boxster was introduced as an entry level Porsche to the 911 to give more people an opportunity to get into a Porsche. They are produced in large numbers (for a Porsche) and offer alot of performance, although less than a 911 (there are exceptions) which was the intention. Sound familiar, it was the same exact plan for the 944.

While there are certainly alot of enthusiasts who own a Boxster, there are also alot of people who are buying/leasing a Porsche for the very first time (again, by design). Maybe they will become enthusiasts or maybe not. Maybe they will buy their Boxsters off lease or get a 996, 993, 911, 951, Cayenne, etc.

But to finally answer the topic, IMHO, the answer is yes. Again, purely on the position of the cars in the Porsche family. The two cars themselves could not be more different.

personally, i couldn't care less of what a boxster driver felt about me. They would have to spend a lot of money to have the kinda fun I have in my 951.

Awww, bummer Luke, I was soooo worried about what you would think too. Maybe if I sell my Boxster and get a 951 I could be as cool as you and all you other 944 buddies!

Hey NetManiac,
The Boxster S is AWESOME. No need to defend it at all, at least to me. And yes it will probably go the way of the 944, and personally I think that's great. The 944 was a resounding success for the company, judging from the numbers sold. Today type 944 is still a beautiful car that EASILY surpasses the looks of most new cars now. It's relatively cheap to get, so what? I've feel it's pointless attaching monetary worth to something as priceless as the experience of owning and driving a Porsche.
Porsche is making "lots" of Boxsters, and honestly, who cares? It doesn't diminish the car at all in my eyes (in fact to me, it simply means there are more beautiful Porsche cars to look at on the road).

Spend some time on the 944 board and drive a 944 and see what happens when you pass another one.

i've been in many Porsche's on the road and I've always tried to keep the 'flash' alive. it just seems that the Boxster driver's are too busy eating cheese and drinking wine ( so to speak ) to realize that there is anybody around.
