Here's another way to visualize the storage space in a Boxster.

The Boxster luggage set!

'The Boxster luggage series is entirely attuned to the stylish tend of this sporty two-seater and attractive for numerous, well-though-out, functional details.

The knapsack [second from the right] which is part of this series, for instance, can be attacked directly between driver and passenger seats to store all necessary travel utensils such as road maps or pocket flashlight.

It combines perfectly with other pieces of luggage in the series.'

I can't see the complete set listed as they used to when the Boxster was launched - looks like you'll need to ask them to put the parts together for you to make the set that fits the car.

Terminal engines?

All 986 Boxster S engines are the same.

Unfortunately, the earlier 986/996 engines have a higher incidence of QC issues that lead to premature engine failure.

Ask me how I know? Twice!

Search on the forum will turn up tons of refs for 986/996 engine failures.

Classic example here: http://glenn986s.zoomshare.com/0.html

Main issues fixed by 02 - hence my suggestion to look at 02 onwards.

The '00 S cars have a higher engine reliability score than any other year Boxster S according to Consumer Reports. For whatever that is worth.

Total 911 article explaining the issues (996 - also covers 986 from the same period) here: http://www.autofarm.co.uk/pdf/Total911_July06.pdf

And here from 911 & Porsche World: http://www.autofarm.co.uk/pdf/911PW_Apr06.pdf

I like old car and she likes newer ones. How can I find a car that we both love? It either needs to be a BMW or Porsche, and I'm betting that a Porsche, albeit still new, is going to feel more like a racecar than the BMW sedan, even if it is an M3.

The M3 vs. 911 has been posted all over the 911 forums, and most would agree that even though the M3 is seriously fast and capable, the 911 feels better and is more fun to drive. I'm better the Boxster is as well.
When I sold my SC I ended up with a Boxster. If the situation for me would not have allowed the luxury of the boxster (having a 3rd car in general), I would have chased down an E36 M3... no doubt in my mind. Having driven my dad's 4dr version and been on the track in some 2dr versions, these are remarkably capable cars. In fact, I still consider his M3 steering feel superior to the boxster. Add in more hp (240 vs my non s 217), AND room for 4 people or kid seats and they make a very strong arguement for the 1 car household.

I bought mine way back when in the UK for my '97 986.

Found this on 986 FAQ

The Boxster Rucksack, also known as the Boxster Daypack, is a custom backpack that goes between the seats and straps to the roll bar. It was originally offered as an option with the Boxster, but it has been discontinued in the U.S.

It is listed in the Tequipment list of options, as part number WAP.035.019, but is no longer available in North America.

However, Diane at the 356 Registry has a contact in England, where they are still available. She can get the rucksack for $160. It will be shipped directly to you from England. You will be billed the cost of the rucksack by the company in England and the rest is her surcharge (profit). This will appear as two separate charges on your credit card. So you can still get one, but at a premium, and it takes three to four weeks to arrive.

The 356 Registry web site is http://www.356registry.org

Long shot, but might be worth it.

Assume they mean:
