Tiptronic Slips
My transmission slips, and shakes the car, in first gear. It only happens in first, although once when it was very cold, it may have slipped in second. It only happens when I floor it. I changed the fluid and filter, it still slips, and the dealer said the transmission can't be repaired and the only option is to replace it. I only have 22,000 miles on the car. Any ideas on used or rebuilt transmissions?

The car is a 2001. I got it with about 3,000 miles, had the ppi done and it didn't show anything. Flew AL to pick it up and noticed a shake in first gear. Had the motor mount replace thinking that was the culprit. When it's cold, thats when it slips. I doubt if the seller or the guy that did the ppi will do anything.

Get a good indie tranny shop
Dealers are basically parts-swappers. They also vacuum out wallets well.
Check with a good indie transmission specialist. Depending on where you are, I can suggest one in North-Central New Jersey.
You mgiht also find out who made the tranny (ZF?). ZF has a rebuilt program.
Sounds the friction material on the clutch is slipping. Did someone beat the heck out of it in 1st gear?

I think the car was really babied. I replaced the tires when I got it due to their age. I would guess tire wear to be just over half. I just can't see running it hard without it showing on the tires. I feel sure it's a ZF gear.

Second, I'd pay a top indie MORE than the dealer. The best indies learned on the dealer's nickel, were smart, ambitious and better educated, and went out to start their own specialist firms.
3rd,t he best indies FIX things, rather than swap $7000 parts.
Apparently you view indies as inferior. Search out better ones.
I view the best as just that - the best.
