Rubber strip on convertible top cover wearing out?

Rubber strip on convertible top cover wearing out?
As you can see from my pics, the black rubber strip on the roof cover has some chunks missing. Should I be worried about this? Does the strip perform some function? What if it completely wears out? How much would it be to get it replaced?
