E stands for “electronic.” In cars equipped with e-gas, the accelerator pedal acts like a sensor. Based on the position of the pedal, it immediately recognizes the performance the driver wants. This output signal is used to adjust the engine management system, the throttle plate, This electronic system takes the place of the traditional control technology via Bowden cable .

Blahhh... blahh blahh..etc..etc stole it from thre Audi site

I think it's the 2000+ cars that have it? But I could be wrong, it may be 99.

google search indicates that E-gas refers to engines that are capable of running on LPG. The reference is from Ford-Australia. Good thing I asked here. I don't think my car is equiped to contain LPG in the tank...

Think "Fly by wire" and apply it to a car........

Think of it as sort of a "wireless" throttle connection. Very cool stuff - at least until it malfunctions. Luckily, I haven't read much about that happening though......
