looking for the S
hey everyone, first post here, looks like a great forum. ive always been a japanese tuner guy but have recently started to have an affection for porsche....
i think the boxster/ boxster S is a great way to get into enjoying a porsche, of although i know there are cheaper options
i'm in ohio thinking of looking for an S or maybe a regular boxster, what model years would you guys recommend for with a budget of around $25k. thanks

good to know, but is it a better idea to get a newer model regular boxster than an older boxster S...?

Well, it would depend on how new the regular boxster is and how old the S is. Personally, I would go for an S. You can probably find some really great deals out there on used ones.

I'd look for an S as well, although there's nothing wrong with a standard Boxster. The only exception is if you can foot for a 2003 or newer standard Boxster (in the $30k range) because they have a glass rear window vs. the plastic unit on all Boxsters pre-'03. (A post '03 Boxster S will be out of your price range.)
And (of course), FYI I think my brother is still selling his... http://www.lumpocole.com/
By the way, where in Ohio are you?

If you're a tuner guy, start with an S. No point in spending $K's on a 2.7L to get you to 3.2L levels at best. The S came out in 2000. I'm pretty sure it was 2003 that there was a minor body "refresh" and a bump in the S HP from 250 to 258 with the addition of a rear glass window. A 2003 for $25K might be tough to find unless it was high mileage. You should be able to find a 2000-2002 for $25K. The range is probably $25K to $35K. Most Porsches are tell taken care of.

Hi,
I have a 2000S and when I bought it I hesitated with a 2003 model which at the time was about $10k extra right into 996 prices. I just wanted the glass window, the redesign of the rear bumper + glove box did not really appeal to me. Of course the extra 8 ponnies are good but still not worth it, same thing for clear lights. In my opinion save the price difference by getting a 2000S, buy a set of clear lights $150 which I did. Once your rear plastic window gives up install a new glass aftermarket top costs about $ 700. Install an Evoms intake for $ 400 to get those 8 ponnies back and you are good to go.
I know the price difference between a 2000S and a 2003S is no longer $10k, but since it is out of your budget anyway. Why not get the 2000S and spend at your convenience about $ 1,200 to add the similar features of a 2003 model.
Here in California you cannot get a nice 2000S for $ 25k it is closer to $ 30k.
Good Luck

That is right, first you limit the scope of the depreciation by avoiding an extra $10k in depreciation.
Second you won't spend that money at once. I mean your top can last let say 2 years before you spring for the upgrade.
I don't know it is up to you. That was my reasoning at the time and I am glad I did not burn the extra cash as my car will not be worth much in the long run. And I would rather use it to add a Cayman in some years in my garage.

interesting you bring the cayman into the convo, i was thinking the same thing with a 911 eventually. im still neutral on the cayman, but im also new to the porsche community, i have heard some good and bad things on it so far.....
the 00/01 S with fairly low mileage seems to be in the 25-30k range in my area right now, seems like a good place to start narrowing
