Default BIG power in a boxster?

Gang,
I'm a porsche nut. I've owned an 87 911, an 88 930 (350hp) and a 78 930 (450hp). I loved the light handling and "tossability" of the 87 911, but I missed the big power of the 930 (once you take a hit of boost, everything else seems like diet caffiene free coca-cola). My brother has a 2000 2.7L boxster and it is an incredible car (but just too darn slow).

Anyway, I haven't had a porsche for four years (new business, 3 kids, private schools, typical excuses), but it's time again. I want a more modern porsche (my favorites are the air-cooled 911s, but I don't have the time or the patience to fool around with a 15 to 20 year old car), so the boxster seems about right age-wise. I also want something that handles like the 87 NA 911 and the boxster fits the bill (not only is the 996TT heavy, but it "feels" heavy too). I also want LOTS of horsepower because that's just my thing. A 993TT would be close, but it's too heavy and the water cooled heads of the 996TT seem to be much better suited for more HP. I'm going to drive on the track some, and a boosted, air-cooled turbo gets hot on the track.

My three requirements are 1) modern 2) lightweight, tossable handling and 3) Lots of HP (like a weight/HP ratio well under 8x) and convertible would be sweet too. This is a third car, so it would be for weekends, trackdays, etc.

So how about a 996TT engine in a Boxster S? Anybody seen it done? I've searched the archives to no avail. It wouldn't have to be a twin turbo from a packaging standpoint, a single would be fine with a six speed anyway (I can stand the higher boost threshhold from my 930 days). Is there a spot for the intercooler? Maybe with the side "scoops" from a 996TT for the rear fenders?

Any ideas on this crazy monster? I know this doesn't make the most financial sense (what porsche does?), but this is really more about building what I want than making an investment.

I know that the boxster isn't really about big horsepower and that that may be missing the point of the car somewhat, but until we've really pushed it, how do we know??? I'll bet the boxster chassis can handle 500hp better than a rear engined 930 with torsion bars, but I may be wrong. Sure would be fun to experiment.

Any leads or ideas or similar cars would be most appreciated. Thank you.

A company call AeroCorp (I think) did a turbo boxster conversion. I saw it featured in a magazine, and thought I saw it on eBay recently. I googled it and couldn't find anything easily...

http://www.trentcarter.com/Default.asp - Has some info on a supercharged Boxster and info on a 3.4 transplant. Not exactly what you are looking for, but I thought it might help.

Ryan,
Thanks for the info, but I'm specifically interested in a turbo.

As for Ruf, they make a 3.4L NA conversion (may be 3.6L now), but that's still only 320hp or so. How about 500?

I drive my Turbo on the track a lot and with proper oil cooling it doesn't get hot, in fact it actually runs cold. I'm running .9 bar and have 380 rwhp.

I know the magazine GT Purely Porsche did a review of a Turbo conversion. The conversion was done by a European (maybe German) company. The article was over a year ago so it's not listed on their site. I'll see if I can locate it and post some info if I find it.

I know it's possible. I believe they used the rear trunk to hold the intercoolers and cut some holes in the decklid for venting.

Actually, I just remembered they called it the "BiTurbo", did a Google and here are a couple links.

I'm not sure if it's the same conversion covered by GT Purely, but Gemballa will probably have some good info for you.

We have 350hp-380hp conversions using a air cooled intercooler and not a water cooled one.

Ruf is opening a center in Dallas, Texas. I suspect they'll offer 3.8L conversions using the new Carrera S engine. I don't see why the 997 engine wouldn't fit.

Not sure about putting all the 996TT apparatus into a Boxster, but Ruf should know.

The Gemballa engines are designed by TTP

Can't vouch for ultimate reliability, I heard viscious rumors of engine failures - but only anecdotal.

as sean said, the 3.8 should swap in easily since it uses the same wet-sump engine casing as the other carrera engines.

the TT, GT2, and GT3 all use the 993 style dry-sump engine casing which does not mate to the transmission.
