Default 986S engine Vs. 996 3.4L??

It seems to me that Porsche sandbagged with their Boxster S engine quite a bit. The 986S and the 996 3.4L are basically the same engine, correct? So why does the 996 make 50 more hp with only 0.2L of displacement? The 986 makes 250hp on 3.2L or about 80hp per L, whereas the 996 makes 300hp on 3.4 or almost 90hp per L. Where is the bottleneck with the 986S? If you put a better intake and headers and 996 cams in a 986 would it make closer to 280hp or so? TIA.

Well, there are quite a few companies that offer header, intake, software combos that raise output by 20 to 25 hp.

For example - check out TTP. TTP Boxster Tuning

They also do a 3.6 upgrade and a twin turbo conversion.

The compression for the 3.2 is 11.0:1

For the 3.4 is 11.3:1

Derrick, the 3.2 is detuned to keep the gap between the 986 and 996.The 3.2L actually uses 4 cats! Intake, headers and ECU change will produce around 280 HP(only on the 3.2 engine). I know of serveral folks who have done this upgrade..the car is lighting quick.

bottom line is the boxster is a very capable chassis in the right driving hands....they can't give it enough horse power to compete with its big brother (996)...now can they? However I (and most other experiance drivers) can out drive a 996 with a Boxster "S" any day of the week. but SSSHHHH, dont tell Weisach
