Question 986 Batteries

Hi fellas,
1996 Boxster here. Silver and all red interior Made in germany. Here is the issue I am facing and apologies in advance but Im a disaster when it comes to electricity.

Alternator died and with it, the battery. The battery I had in the car is a CCA 440 CA 545 RC 80. Its pretty small. I read online the replacement is a Group 48 battery, so I orderedone, but when I got it, its slightly bigger than what I currently have, and Id swear more powerful:

MARXON Group 48 H6 L3 Start and Stop Car Battery 12v 70AH 760CCA AGM BCI48 Maintenance Free Automotive Replacement Batteries

Am I safe installing this in the Boxster? I have an amplifier and a double Din radio w touchscreen. Thanks in advance fellas!

I have a H6/Group 48 in my car. There are multiple threaded holes in the battery plate so the battery you purchased should work fine.

Thanks so much for the reply Jerome, will be installing this SOLID ROCK battery aka weights 9000 lbs today and report back. Alternator is next...! Then the 996 oil sender and the 996 instrument gauge swap!

Just make sure you run your battery cover.. with a group 48 you will be fine though.

batteries usually come with a plug and a fitting so you can vent either side and block the other. its part of the orange thing that covers the positive battery post.

oh if its manufactured in 96 likely a 97 model year maybe ? .

My memory about the batteries is you have to pay attention to where the posts are and about the venting. You want to go expensive, you can use an AGM. I did and had to buy an adapter plate and a slightly cable.

Here are the specs for a US car:The 986 (Model years 1997-2004) takes a BCI Group 48 (12.1X 6.9 X 7.6"), the 987 (2005-) takes a BCI Group 94R ( 12.4 X 6.9 X 7.5 "); both right hand positive terminal. The 94R is also slightly lower in CCA.

The 986 Tiptronic battery is bigger than the manual transmission version. They are listed this way in the general section of the official repair manuals:

Ah/A 60/280 Manual

Ah/A 70/320 Tiptronic

So buy a bigger CCA battery if you live in colder climes, drive a TIP Boxster, or have a bigger amp in the car.

H6 is size 48
H7 is size 94R

Both should fit a 986.

Cars are made 1 year before the actual 'production year' so its a 97 ')
PS recently replaced my battery for the 986 and it was easy- padded the front 'trunk' bodywork with blanket, used this a seat, put my feat inside and 'down' into the trunk and it was ergonomic and tidy.

hmmm replaced my battery two weeks ago- US /Canada 1998 986 and the battery leads /posts were and are: Positive =left side of car( when viewing from the front of the car) and Negative/Ground =right side. Replacement battery matched fine and just had to extend the vent hose a bit to match the new battery vent position. 2 weeks of occasional driving (getting cool here in Ontario, Canada overnight around 12C at times and no issues with starting. In fact, I swear the car seems to be 'peppier' with the new battery.

Probably a good sized hardware store- take the piece in with you for matching. I think also HomeDepot have large rolls of clear plastic tubing that they sell by the foot.
