Pics of My Modded 986 Boxster S
Thought that I would share some pics of my modded first generation (986) 2002 Porsche Boxster S.
It’s Lapis Blue metallic paint with a Savannah Beige leather interior and came with pretty much every available option, including heated sport seats, white-faced gauges and blue painted rollover hoops with tan leather trim. As an “S” model, it came with the 3.2 liter flat 6 engine and 6 speed manual transmission from that year’s base model 911, along with “Big Red”’ Brembo brakes with cross-drilled rotors.
Mods include:
- Borla exhaust
- Performance chip
- 18 inch Veloce Speedline 3.6 wheels
- Spec-D Tuning LED Projector headlights
- DEPO Red/Clear LED taillights
- Alpine ILX-650 touchscreen double-DIN head unit with Apple CarPlay, reverse camera and Rockford Fosgate amplifier and speakers
I chose the first generation Boxster because, coming from 20+years of owning air-cooled 911s, I like small, compact and light Porsches and the more recent models were just too large and heavy. I drove a base model 986 and thought that it was underpowered, but I’ve found the “S” engine with the Borla exhaust and performance chip to have more than enough power, along with a very nice exhaust note. Unlike my 911s, with their awkward US spec gearing, the 6 speed’s gearing is very well-spaced.
Out of all of the mods, I think that the headlights and taillights made the biggest difference in the car’s appearance. The factory bulb units were yellowed and hazy and made the car look really dated. With the LED headlights and taillights, people pretty frequently can’t figure out exactly what it is, sometimes circling it in parking lots before coming over to ask outright. It gets a steady stream of compliments wherever I go with it.
Hope that you enjoy!

Thanks! The taillights were actually really inexpensive and super easy to install. Here is a link to them: https://www.ebay.com/itm/17325172951...caArDqEALw_wcB

You can see the LED projector headlights better in these pics. The horizontal strips of LEDs along the bottom of the headlight units are clear when acting as running lights and orange when blinking as turn signals or 4 way lights. They also provide MUCH better visibility at night than the stock units.

They’re not cheap, but I think that they’re worth it.

Waiting around to see if someone with a white Boxster and a white TJ shows up...
Then we will need y'all to have a 4th of July get together.
I wonder what color dog they'll have?

Chip
do you think the chip made a difference in the drive?
