The Rennline phone mount is no drill from what I've seen.

I’ve tried about every phone holder on the market for the 9x6.
I like like the Rennline.

[QUOTE=The Boxster dash is identical to the 996, so this will fit just fine.[/QUOTE]
Thanks for the recommendation. I do have one concern.
This page of the website says it is not compatible with the 986 Boxster.
One of the differences between a 986 and a 996 is that the 986 has a 3-gauge cluster and the 996 has 5 gauges. The binnacle over the gauges has a different shape and the mounting of the hazard switches is different. (I retrofitted a 996 cluster and binnacle in my 986 and I can confirm they are different. The difference is subtle, but if you look at your 986 dashboard and compare it to the photos of the phone mount you can see where you might have a problem installing the phone mount.) I suggest that anyone who plans to order this for a 986 talk to the seller and make sure it will work.

I looked at a 986 today that’s was here to have the airbag light reset.
I can’t believe I never noticed the difference before.
Definitely wont work for a 986.
I edited my post above so no one makes the mistake of ordering one.

Very nice phone mount ideas here ... I myself was more interested in a simple inexpensive yet functional mount, that would allow me to do practical things such as viewing clearly google maps and directions - without endless fumbling.
This one is from Amazon and cost me $9 ... It fits perfectly, with the clamp gently grabbing the vent . It is light weight and does the job, for me.
Spring loaded, securely grabs the phone when you slide it in from the top.
Easily clips out of the vent by pushing the top plastic button on the rear, when you don't need it or don't want it.

I didn’t want to block the head unit, so got this windshield mounted SCOSCHE one from the local T-Mobile store.
Very solid construction and tucks my iPhone 14 into the area at the base of the windshield and top of the dash very well when oriented horizontally.
The arms are spring-loaded to expand to snugly fit the phone.
In addition to the suction cup for the windshield, it comes with a fitting for mounting on the HVAC duct.

Meh. If you want the holder in your 986 down by the base of the shifter.
We have a bunch of different generation iOtti mounts - these grab the HVAC vent grills. Not perfect, but Good Enough and they are portable, so also good in rental cars.

The point I was trying to make is that this one fits the Boxster vent pretty well ...
I have a very nice phone holder (also from Amazon) in my Audi S4 and it's completely different, it slides all the way into the right or left cup holder and it's fully adjustable / rotatable.
My wife has a Mercedes SLK and that phone holder is completely different too, since there the air vents are rounded. There it clips securely with a spring on the inside outer edges of the air vent. It is also quite inexpensive from Amazon.
So my experience is that different cars might require totally different setups (I don't like the windshield suction cup ones, they have long spindly arms and look ugly, to me).
