Default Coolant Type Question

I am changing the coolant on my Boxster 2.7 that has 40k miles. I don't know if or when it was ever changed last. I disconnect the hoses underneath the car and let the coolant drain out. It filled up most of a 5 gallon bucket. The old coolant is green. Me being a dummy, I filled the car up with a mix of beck/arnley pink concentrate and distilled water without fully flushing it. I got the car to where it showed full on the tank and then started it and filled again once the level went down. I drove the car for about 15mins until it got up to 180. I parked at home and topped off the coolant. I only used about 15 liters of coolant. I'm guessing there was still more to drain and I should of flushed it out with distilled water to begin with. It's only been a day so I'm thinking about draining it all over and flushing it to be safe. I heard mixing coolants is dangerous.

Any advice? Thanks everyone.

Definitely, without a doubt, never mix coolant types, especially on Porsches. You should completely flush the system of the old green stuff and put OE type Porsche-approved coolant in the car.

I experienced the same thing when I bought my last 996. The previous owner had someone flush the system and put plain ol' green stuff in the car. I flushed it completely out and with an Airlift system put the right stuff back in it.

Okay what I've done and what I've been told to do is obviously drain the system as much as possible put distilled water in it run it a short while drain it again repeat that process drain it again then go to AutoZone they carry and antifreeze made by peak. It is made for Porsche 2004 or older going to take about five jugs of the stuff then you should be getting to go been running mine for 30,000 zero problems.

You should look up the Porsche recommended coolant, either you buy the coolant from porsche or use the coolant in a grey gallon with a purple top, you can get it from advanced or napa. Couldn’t remember the name lol.

The Porsche stuff is available by the gallon as 000.043.305.75. An alternative is Zerex G-40, which may or may not be identical except for the absence of a Porsche logo and Porsche price.

You should try to remove as much of the old coolant as possible from the system before refilling. This may require you to drain from several locations, for example decoupling coolant hoses. You'll also want to use a vacuum filling tool such as the AirLift to refill: it will greatly reduce the risk of air pockets.
