The 356 is flat-out a slow car.

You're dellusional. A stock 89 carerra? NOW that's a slow car. You want to be embarassed, a Neon SRT 4 will probably hand that its ***! A stock 951 is pretty damn slow too.

Remember what your boxster will be worth in another 3 years too...kinda like a standard 944 today - obsolete!

Secondly back in the 60's I remember guys with 356's making the same arguments you are now.
Again I don't own a Boxster...I own an 87 Carrera which I love and the fact that some of the newer cars are faster does not bother me the way it bothers you...in fact I love all Porsche's from 356 to 911 to boxster 996. They all have there own good and bad points...I just wish I could afford 1 of each.

Wow, this was one heck of thread.
I own a 99 911 C4 Cab and an 01 Boxster S, and it's a coin flip on visceral performance on the street. They're both great cars for completely different driving styles.
The Boxster S is more nimble and seems quicker on the go.
The 911 has a ton of power and, when driven correctly, has a lot more to give when the Boxster has no more.
I love my Boxster S because it's a fun car to drive.
I love the 911 because it's powerful and is well regarded every where I go.
One of the reasons I bought the Boxster S is because of these awards. It's a great car, well deserving of the Porsche name.
Thanks for starting the thread, the intent was correct!

As a new owner of a Boxster S, I simply have to put my comments in. I have had a 1973.5 911T for 15 years. I love the car. Each and every year, I have tried the new 911s and other Porsches. And each and every year, I came away feeling I would never trade my early 911 for the new one. Sure, the new ones were and are faster, handle better, and stop faster. But, somewhere along the lines, I feel they lost the sports car feel and beautiful engine song the earlier cars had, and got heavier and quieter. Then along came the Boxster S. Sure, it is heavier and quieter, and has more creature comforts, but it does it in its own special way that I love. A way that is completely different than the 911. And, quite frankly, the scream from the Boxster S's engine is a beautiful song that in some ways I like better than my 911. I did spend a lot of time trying a 996 that is truely a remarkable car. But, in the end, the Boxster S won. The key was the fun factor. The Boxster S just felt like more of a fun sports car that I enjoyed all the time.
Now, I have to admit, I have never tracked a Boxter or a 996, and have only had my '73 911 on a track once. One of the greatest days of my life. But, that's the point. It's the same point that we all have about why do people drive SUV's when they never take them off road? Why do people buy sports cars if they never race them? My answer is that I enjoy the driving fun of the sports cars. That is why I liked the Boxster S over the 996. It just had more every day driving fun.
Like another contributor said, this car has been voted numerous times, year after year, and truly is, one of the best sports cars on the planet. In my humble opinion, one of the only current cars that comes close to the fun factor is the Honda S2000. But, that's a whole other thread - and I happily chose my Boxster S over the Honda and would do so every day of the week again.

Sarcasm and insults are the refuge of those who cannot justify their positions with intelligent and rational arguments.
Love my 944, love my Boxster, wish I could afford a 356, a 911, a 968, a 993, and a 996 as well.

This may be a bit late as the fire appears to be out but this whole business about the boxster being slow seems like a mine is bigger sort of game. Although 6.7 0-60 isnt blistering, its not slow, and its certainly fast enough to be fun. i have an 87 911 and an 86 944 na, and guess which i prefer, the 944

I have a 924S race car and a 02 Boxster.
I have also had a 1972 914, 1989 911 C4 and a 1992 968. I have loved all of these cars because each of them have unique and wonderful attributes which make them simply fun to own. The fastest of any of them around a road race track has been the 924S which, except for the 914, is the least powerful. The 924S is the best handler in stock form. (mine does have lots of $$$$ in the suspension I admit). As I don't drag race, I don't care too much about ultimate HP or 0-60 times. For me, the standard Boxster has plenty enough HP to be a thoroughly enjoyable sporting street ride. How fast do we need to go in a straight line?
