I haven't owned a corvette or mercedes, but my DIY experience with BMW is fairly extensive and if you've done it with those, you'll be fine with a Boxster and help of the internet.
I agree with your rationale that you can find a better car to start with than the one you originally posted about. there's a ton of them out there. good luck

I would have done the fluids, filters, and tires, and left the rest to chance. The odds are very much in your favor. And if you've maintained anything, you can maintain a Boxster. They're pretty easy to wrench, and there are a ton of videos out there.

However: Dealerships. They have to make their money. Look for a private sale.
