Rear end chattering at idle and takeoff
My 2000 S makes a kind of metallic chattering noise at idle (in neutral, clutch engaged - the sound stops when I press the clutch in) and when taking off (letting the clutch out). It's not very loud; I can really only hear it if there's a wall next to me for the sound to bounce off of. It also only occurs after the car is warmed up; completely silent when it's cold. Once the car is moving, it's flawless and sounds perfectly fine at any speed in any gear.
A few months ago I did pretty much everything back there - clutch, flywheel, IMS, slave cylinder, gearbox oil - all brand new. The noise existed both before and after I finished and doesn't seem to have gotten any better or worse.
I'm not all that worried about it, but I'm curious nonetheless. Any idea what it could be?

I have no experience with an S.
But my 996 Turbo manifested the noise, too. And it was more noticeable. It only really was present after the drive train was fully warmed up. I'd roll up to a stop slipping the shift lever into neutral and releasing the clutch pedal. Then I'd here the irregular rattle. I could make it go away be pressing the clutch pedal down all the way then released it again.
I could make it reappear by revving the engine then the noise would be back after the engine returned to idle.
At some point after new O2 sensors or new coils/plugs -- the sensors were done at 132K miles the plugs/coils done around 140K miles -- the noise was gone. Seems something I did (had done) smoothed out the engine idle and the transmission rattle went away.

Managed to pick up the sound on mic really well tonight:

Sound about like what everyone's talking about here?

I listened to it but the recording is short and quite honestly it didn't sound unlike mine which I think is normal. Some mechanical noise is expected especially when the clutch is engaged and there is no tension on the gears in neutral.

Thanks for the input, it's more reassuring when someone actually hears the sound. Maybe I'll try to get a better recording at some point

To the OP: If you want a 2nd opinion have a Porsche tech give a listen and offer his opinion. They hear all sorts of noises all the time and can distinguish between normal and abnormal rather quickly.

Had the clutch and TOB replaced in my 86 BMW 325es a couple thousand miles ago (5 years ago). I had that noise BEFORE the clutch/TOB replacement... and it remains.
Must be the new normal.. and the "heavier" sounds correct.
