OT: 2019 718 Boxster Spyder

Is a 718 still a 718 if it has a flat-6? I always thought the whole rebranding was about selling this as a 4-cyl. An NA flat-4 would be cool (ala S2000). Even a turbo flat-4 with serious boost would be fun (if not full of character). I just don't get how a detuned GT3 flat-6 would work. If displacement is changed, then either stroke or bore changes, leading to cam and ECU changes - at that point its a whole new engine. Just an ECU change and airflow restriction IMO is also problematic.

There were eight-cylinder versions of the original 718 though. It wouldn't be the first time Porsche put six-cylinder engines in four-cylinder cars either (914/6, 904/6, probably some more).

^ cool. never knew 718 had an 8-cyl variant. i guess they could do a 718-6 like the 914-6. but again. how would they downsize a GT3 engine - i don't see how they can easily drop 100HP without making big changes.

why do they insist on the burbling / crackling exhaust in these cars?
