Since nobody built one for STU, proposal is out to slot the 986, 986S, and 987.1 base to STR. Still 255s max, max wheels drop to 9.0".

986S should have been in STR from the very beginning; shame it took so long. Glad to see everything through 981 and 987.2S finally has a place to play in STR/STU!

Ha, I didn't even notice the later cars. I think my mind skips right past stuff I can't afford.

 

Meanwhile, in 996 land...did I ever end up getting allowed in STU? I think I was but only on 255 tires? lmao I should show up to Bristol in STU with some 255s on the rear just to demonstrate how ridiculous that is.

Come to think of it, I DO have a pair of pretty good shape 255 18 RE71Rs I took off the front just sitting around unmounted

 

No, no 996. Also, both STR and STU (MR) have a 255mm tire limitations which means skinnier than OEM tires and wheels on all 987s. You can't even run OEM 987.1 wheels in STR because of the 9" wheel limitation.

So while this sounded awesome at first, it's still rather useless because nobody is ever going to show up for an event in a 987 or 981 with STR/STU-legal tires.

 

That sounded so good until the tire size limitation. In STR I understand it, in STU it is un-necessary.

 

I just wrote my letter- but it was less about Boxster/Cayman classing, and more complaining about the crappy tire allowances.

 

Meh, limiting tire and wheel seems to work pretty well to balance ST.

 

Handicapping cars with tiny tires is very poor at capturing popular cars with popular street modifications and anathema to the intent and philosophy of the class. The ST we have today is a class with SRS BZNS compromise rules that hurt the regions. All cars in ST should, at the very least, be allowed to run on OEM wheels and tires.

If you were to show up with a 987.1 (or 350Z, or C5, etc) on bone-stock wheels and tires, it would be illegal to run in ST. And that is a problem.

 

Sounds like a great rule exception for a region to make at local events.

 

My recommendation: alter the rule from absolute tire width to average. 255mm absolute makes stock 987.1 illegal. However 255mm average would permit 235 front and 265 rear and largely fix the problem without inordinate impact to the balance of performance.

Long-term, though, we’re going to need to create new ST classes to capture the faster cars. Every car in Street should have an ST class to progress to.

 

There needs to be a progression for SS cars, other then SSR or SM. I would like to one day be able to do a few mods to my car, and still run street tires. I'm sure there are plenty of corvette guys that would also.

 

I could go to ASP but that is a Hoosier tire class and I would like to stick to a street tire ST class.

 

It might in the short term, but tends to favor the lightest car in each class. Since cars tend to get bigger / heavier over time, we end up w/ classes dominated by 25yr old cars. Vintage autocross & stale.

The tire rule is difficult, I'd like to see something that allows larger tires yet still limited by stock bodywork. Our northern neighbors have (had?) a plumb bob rule - the corner of the tread needs to fit inside of the point defined by a plumb bob hanging over the widest point of the unmodified fender. Or, (for example) allow 20mm wider tire & 1" wider wheels vs stock to remove the interpretive element. Newer / heavier stuff gets more width vs lighter older.

Glad the Boxster finally got classed, I just hope that a low participation now w/ old cars doesn't get misinterpreted as 'see, we told you Porsche guys aren't interested in ST'.
