Default 996 STU

My letter proposing allowing the 996 in STU has been reviewed by the street touring board and sent to the SEB for review.

I'm not sure what recommendation the street touring board made, but if it's being sent to the SEB then that's good.

Specially since I just bought the M030 suspension for my car as opposed to spiffy coil overs.

That's the same email I got when I wrote letters requesting classing for 986 in STR right before that was summarily rejected in the next fastrack. And the same response I got a year later when they got around to answering the follow-up leter requesting classing for the 986/987 in STU, right before that was also rejected.

At least you got an answer. I've been waiting 7 months for a response to my letter about 987.2S in AS (#14899).

I also think the 996 would be too fast for STU. You can basically build a GT3 with a little less power.

so? STU is supposed to be faster than SS.. what does STU prep allow that a GT3 doesn't already have out of the box? How would a jr. GT3 be too fast on narrower than stock rear tires?

Good point. When I looked into it, I was comparing it to the C5. Width, weight, and wheelbase it just smokes the Corvette. It's at a power disadvantage, but it's able to put down much more power than the C5, especially mid corner. That's something that a lot of people overlook.

I don't know the type of algorithm the powers that be go through to class cars. I may be way off in my assumption. But I know they also weigh risk / reward. How many people would adding the 996 bring to the class? To the sport? What if it's an overdog and all the Zs and C5s are obsoleted?

What does a 100% STU 996 build look like? 40th AE (powerkit), Giken, GT3 control arms, light seats, header, exhaust, pimp shocks, camber? 255s & 275s?

I'm pretty sure Tom / abqautoxer has stated at least a few times that you haven't received a response because various options for your letter are still being considered. The SAC and SEB aren't going to just snap their fingers and make a major cross-class move the moment they get a letter suggesting it.

Also, the dust is still settling from the last major change to STU (addition of the 350Z and Corvette). If I were on the STAC, I'd want to wait to see if the current STU formula will be successful before adding another car. Plus, if participation with the current formula is insufficient, no way in hell is adding the 911 to the class going to turn things around.

996 makes less power and runs less tire than anyone else in STU (can't fit more than 255 in front).

My message is also being reviewed. Expecting my "thank you, come again" response.

Why not approach SCCA with proposal to create an STP class? Class that allows Boxster S, Cayman S and 997? Would potentially attract a whole new group of drivers.

You can count the number of autocross classes the SCCA has created for a single marque on one hand, even after you chop five fingers off of that hand...

Aside from STP becoming ST Pony in the conventional wisdom lexicon, the way for this to be successful is not to limit it to Porsches, but to all the other cars deemed too fast for STR/STU. SST for Porsches, Corvettes, etc!

Although there was a time in the early 2000s when SS was pretty much Spec Z06.

Oh, absolutely -- many classes evolve to a place where one marque or model dominates. I'm just not aware of there ever having been an autocross class created specifically for a single marque, let alone one that's been unpopular in existing classes.
