There is really nothing to choose from in the top 3 SP classes, timewise.
If fact, CSP cars are quickest.
DSP has 90s BMWs in it and therein *may* a chance for the aircooled 9eleben to be competitive.

The truth is SCCA is a build (or buy) to class set up and Porsche (particularly the AC 911) is not of the chosen few for buying. In fact, the 911 is flat out not a good AX car. Couple that with the quotes of "I ain't cuttin up my 9eleben to run in XXXX."

So, sit back & whine, write the SEB, or suck eggs.....or get out the sawsall & get with the program.

Me? I wouldn't cut up a good 911 either cause it would still be sucking wind.
The rule changes in XP for next year make turbo motors more viable in AC Porsches....but bring money. In fact, the Prepared classes are about the only place in SCCA where Porsches have a shot ($$..er..SS ain't bad either). The 914 does OK in FP & XP.

GT2/GT3 in ASP isn't that bad, but perhaps not so much at the national level (Newman's GT3 came in only behind Hyman's GT-R in the rain at Packwood). BSP isn't a bad class, though like all the classes it heavily depends on who is running (a good driver in an prepped Evo/STi/Solstice, or random local drivers). ASP being the highest class is more of a money pit IMO (plus the more price reasonable Corvettes that go very fast).

BTW, Cal's RX-7 has a Corvette motor in it. He's also still working on prepping it since he just got it (it used to be Densmore's SM2 car before he gave up trying to beat McKee and made it into a fun car). I drove that RX-7 in SM2 trim (with the dual-turbo rotary) and it was by far the easiest car to drive stupid fast I've been in. My first run I drove like a klutz and still came out something like 5th in PAX (just a local event with ~70 drivers).

All of this is totally irrelevant for the original poster, who probably isn't concerned with how fully prepped cars stack up at SCCA nationals when it's his second event ever and using Nitto tires. It will depend more on who else happens to be in his class and whether he can have fun. Being the autocross results stalker that I am, it looks like the South Bend events have a healthy and fast BSP class including a 02 Boxster S, with nobody in ASP so far. Only 7 events for the year which is too bad (we have 27 on our schedule).

For classing, the confusing thing for me was that neither the ASP or BSP line is a NOC, but both matched the car. Thank goodness again for the upcoming changes making it much clearer.

....an interesting fact - Erik Strelnieks, a past SCCA National Champion in SS (Corvette/RX7)and SSM in a Mazda RX7 is now running a Boxster in FP......
