Default Autocross, DE's, and 964's

Good morning all!

I have just acquired my first 911 (a 1992 C2 widebody) and the car needs tires. The previous owner had purchased a set of tires to put on the car, but they had a treadwear of like 500 so I had him keep them.

My 911 will be starting life totally stock, and I won't have the budget to add the wheels that I would like just yet.

A couple of questions;

1) Is the 964 competitive in a stock or STS class?
2) Any suggestions on a good tire that I can use on the street, auto-x, and track (spring mountain)?

I live in Las Vegas, so the likelihood of rain is low, and it is a second car so I won't drive it in the rain unless I get caught.

Appreciate any help, I didn't see a lot of information here on auto-x with these cars.

Hi and welcome! Don't buy anything till you've done a few autocrosses
with the clubs you want to compete in. Then you'll know better what
your possible classes will be and what may or may not be competitive.
There are several 140 tire-wear 'extreme summer' tire models that are
very good for street and autocross. If being as fast as you can is the
goal, then there are street-legal semi-slicks (Hoosier AS06 and Kumho 710)
which will go fast, wear out very quickly in the street, and be very dangerous
in the rain.

The 964 does not qualify for any SCCA ST autox class.
It does qualify for SCCA C-stock.
I competed against one a few years ago in CS at an SCCA NT event, but it wasn't well driven or fully prepped.
A good driver can make any car competitive at a local event, so I wouldn't worry about that to start.
Just get good 140 tread wear street tires and have fun. See link for tire recs

For the Vegas area, I'd look at Hankook RS3 and Kuhmo XS. Both are excellent summer high-performance tires and love it hot. The Kuhmos are slightly better dry but have very poor wet weather performance.

I highly recommend staying on street tires your novice year even if your class allows r-comps; you can decide after that if you want to stay on street tires (assuming the club has a street tire class) or get some hoosiers.

Thank you for the help!

I have a lot of seat time in autocross- but no time with a large boxer 6 hanging behind the rear axle

I will likely spend more of my efforts running DE's at Spring Mountain, the seat time in auto-x has been an issue for me in the past as it is hard to spend a whole day for a few runs.

I will look into those tires- should be perfect as we get acquainted
