Default Tire suggestion for '87 924S

Hello.

Looking for suggestions for a good tire, and tire size for my 924S. I will only have one set of wheels for now (original phone dials), so the tires will have to pull double duty. I am using the car for daily commuting, and running about 1 auto-x every month over the summer. I will run in stock class, and the suspension will be stock with a new set of basic Bilsteins front and back. I'm not looking to set any records, as I auto-x just to keep my skills sharp, and have a little fun. I was thinking 205-60-15, but someone suggested 225-50-15. I was concerned that 225 might be too wide for the stock rims even though the tire specs say they will fit.

Thanks,
Paul.

Stock phone dials are 6x15, iirc.. 225s are too wide for a six and will cause the sidewall to have too much curl. A 205 is about as wide as you will find. 205-60-15 is in keeping with "stock" overall diameter and comfort (iirc, bone stock was 195-65-15). However, you may not find many 205-60 choices out there.

If the budget allows, I would look for a set of 7x15 wheels and run 225's all around on them.

That is right, 195-65-15 is stock, and they are 15x6. I thought 225 was way too wide for the rim for exactly that reason, but I thought I would ask. Eventually, I will try to pick up a second set of wheels just for the auto-x tires and go with the 225s. For now, the best option I have found so far seems to be the BFG G-Force Sport, or the Falken Ziex. I have used both, and they seem to be able to handle the commute plus the weekend abuse.

There are a number of great autocross tires out there, I highly recommend Dunlop Star Spec, if they come in your size. I say that because it's the best of the top tier summer tires (Hankook RS3, Kuhmo XS, Yoko AD08, Bridgestone RE11) in cool weather, which I imagine you'll see a lot of in Ontario. It's terrific as a DD tire, too, with great wet weather performance, and good grip as soon as you pull out of your driveway.

Any good autocross tire is going to suck in the snow, though, so you really have to balance that out for practicality and throw on winter rubber when the season is over.

Edit: closest sizes are 195/55-15 and 205/50-15. 205/50-15 would give you about 3/4" of drop, too, which may or may not be desirable.

My summer commute is mainly highway, so I doubt if I want to go to a smaller OD. It could be good for gearing though. I will experiment with what is left of the stock tires - I think they will survive the first month, and a trial auto-x that the local club runs in the spring.

I just received a set of 205-60-15 BFG G-Force Sports for a customers car at work today. They look pretty decent, and are dirt cheap (I know, not always a good thing). The old Traction T/A used to be pretty good at holding up to abuse, and sticking reasonably well. I might try them until I can afford a second set of wheels, and then go for a dedicated set of auto-x wheels & tires.
