Default 2010 PAX INDEX

I found the numbers for CSP and the STR to be a huge difference. The only difference for my 944NA will be tires and rims.

Street tires vs. near-slicks makes a big difference in times, though. Additionally, for, say, a third gen Miata, the differences between STR and CSP are a bit more extensive. Off the top of my head, my Miata's lightweight flywheel isn't allowed in STR. Another friend is removing quite a few parts and having to undo the "flare" part of his finder roll, to be legal for STR.

Yes, if you compared a CSP Miata on 245 width street tires to an STR Miata, you're going to see very little difference. But if you put a top driver in the car and compare STR to the letter of the rule, and CSP to the letter of the rule, the CSP car will be significantly faster. Putting 285 width Hoosiers on a Miata makes a huge difference in time.

CSP has no wheel or tire width limit. This means you can put much more rubber on the ground. There's nothing stopping you from putting 285/305 tires on 11" rims on a 944 in CSP but not in STR. Also remember that the PAX is not sanctioned by SCCA and is not used in any National or Divisional level competition. Its only an unofficial guideline that some people use to compare cars in different classes.

au contraire....I do believe that at the pro solo events where the ultimate winner has an indexed time it is indeed used at each event.

0.863 versus 0.842 is about a second and a half on a sixty second course - seems like the right ballpark to me.

The SCCA Pro Solo indices are distinct from, although similar to, the PAX / RTP indices.

Partially true. The Pro Solo PAX is different than the standard PAX. The numbers are developed by the ProSolo folks and are sometimes numerically differ from the "normal" PAX to account for the extra importance of drag race type launches and extremely short courses. It is used during the challenge rounds to figure out handicaps when cars from different classes run against eachother. It is also used in L1, L2 and the Indexed Race tire class (Prepared and Modified)

How wide of a tire could you get on a CSP 986S? Is there a sweet spot where it becomes too big?

First off Boxster and Cayman are in BSP not CSP. But you could put short 10" wheels all around and go with 275/15 or 255/16 or 295/17 or even a 315/17. No idea what would actually fit or be fastest but since you can update/backdate brakes and offsets and widths are unlimited you could put almost anything under a boxster. The joy and problem with Street Prepared is the vast number of choices you get to make. It can be very expensive to try everything until you get the right combo but cars prepared to the SP limit can be very fast indeed.
