Need to beat the Boxters, what's the "best" stock rubber?
#16
How "stock" do you need to be? You mention running 205/255s. Would rules allow for a 225/255 combo? or 225/275? Seems there are some minor differences among regions about how "stock" stock is.. hence the Showroom Stock class that has recently cropped up at PCA events. I would be sure I read and understood the rules for the class you wish to run in.. and then be sure to maximize your car to those rules. My 2.7 Boxster came with the optional 18" package and 225/265 tires.. that alone makes a huge difference over the stock 17" 205/255 set up, for instance.

Nitto and Hankook both have new top-end street tires coming out in the next few weeks, too. I'm anxiously awaiting the reviews and reports! I need new tires before the season starts, though, and certainly before April, since my rear tires are down to the wear lines in the middle and won't pass state inspection. Hurry up tire makers!

I run ContiSportContact 2s 225/40/18 and 285/30/18. At our monthly autocross' I consistently run 1.5-2 seconds behind Sharon Shields and 4.5-5 behind Danny in the same car. I have M030 w/bilstien HDs. I run with or better than most of the Boxters except the Shields'.

I have a set of Falken Azenis RT615 that I really like for street/autocross. 200 wear rating, stiff sidewall and very sticky. &ggresive treadblock that starts at 6/32 depth. Check Vulcan if they have your size. My 15s are only 82 a piece

I have 4 cars right now as luck would have it. The Boxster S I just picked up has put all the rest of my cars in sleep mode. It's all I ever want to drive. I drove it to work yesterday with 27 degrees outside on summer tires, just because the weather man said it was going to get up to 50 in the afternoon. I had a 97 Boxster that I sold a few years ago, this Boxster S is so much better. I know some think it's a chick car, but I have a green one with a hard top, and really don't care what anyone thinks anymore. I've added 18s since this picture, and I have a bunch more stuff to upgrade.

Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 (not to be confused with RE011) should be coming out in before the SCCA April 30th deadline to be 09 season legal, and is supposed to be better than the RE-01R. I really don't think anyone can go wrong with any of the above tires, though; they've consistantly been at the top of the heap, and the performance differences have been smaller than the margin of error on all the benchmark tests Tirerack and others have run.

Nut is tight, done a few years of Auto-X with other cars, & have almost 10 years of open track driving.
If you are not competing in all of your local regional and divisional SCCA Solo events, you are not running against the top autocross drivers in your area. Competition makes you faster. Ride with an SCCA national champion and you'll soon realize that the "Nut" can never ever be fully tightened.

You want to get faster?
Have the TTOD guys ride along with you and give you advice. The NW crowd is very fast. You can learn a ton.
Sign up for the EVO school and spend a few days learning the "stuff".
FWIW, I know everytime I get Tom Kotzian (look him up) in my car at a local AX I learn something i could do much better.
Like several already said, tighten the nut benid hte wheel.

I know several multi-year SCCA Solo national class champions. None of them would ever utter these words. That's why they are champions.

What I should have said, is I'm driving the car past it's current stock capability, & need to make the CAR faster in stock class with sticker rubber then I currently have. My runs are within .2sec & I am out driving the car. I'm faster then all the 911's in my class, & sometimes faster then the #2 Boxter.
Yes, we can always learn, but taking a novice DE type class is not going to help. I do ask for help from the faster guys. I'm also a ex-instructor, who took a couple of years off to focus on other things.
That being said, most of the great tires are not made in my size, so I ended up getting Michelin PS2's. It looks like my competition went with Yoko Ad07's, witch are faster. I passed on the AD07 due to wear, noise & comfort, as this is my DD that does 12kmi a year.

I know for a fact that when I let the fast guys at my club drive my car, they find time I leave on the table.

If I had the time, this Sunday I would have gladly paid the $100 for Tom Kotzian to give me 1/2 day of instruction in my car but unfortunately I had other obligations when the opportunity was made availble.
