AutoX Tires

Matt,
The sizes for these cars that work best in autox are the 225/245 setup, unfortunately not available in the V710. I had some success running the 225s square on 7 & 8" wheels (the extra width made the rear tires perform "wider"), but you won't be able to run the 225s on your 9"ers.
The Hoosier A6s are the best in the category, though they wear out very quickly. I corded a set on my sixth event on them. The R6, believe it or not, is a decent alternative. They are very grippy, and for whetever reason do not cord anywhere as easily as the A6s. I'm currently trying out a set of the new BFG R1s, and they are similar to the R6, slightly less feel, but perhaps better longevity.
The RA-1s are a great all arounder if you plan to drive on the streets, the track, autox, and in all kinds of weather. At Pocono I this past year I even went through snow/slush on my RA-1s with no problems whatsoever. Amazing tires. If you plan to drive on the road, these are the only choice IMO.
See you are some Metro events next season.

I wish I could. But that's not an option right now. Maybe next year.
Maybe I'll look into the R6's then. I'd like to get more than a few events out of them. Tires can be an expensive habit.
Yeah...see you at the next events. I didn't make too many NNJR ones this year. I think only one or two in the beginning of the year.

Matt,
According to folks over on sccaforums.com, 8 new sizes of V710's are slated for production starting in January. Among them is a 245/45R16.

So I had decided to go with the Victoracers and went to my local tire shop that I use. He called me today and told me that Kumho is no longer providing new orders of Victoracers or V710's. He said if I wanted them the best thing would be to buy two sets off tire rack because they probably still have stock left. Now I'm wondering if it is worth buying a tire that is going to be discontinued. But what else is there beside Kumho's for autocross.....I know...Hoosiers.

I find it very hard to believe they are not taking orders on 710s.
It is also worth noting that 710s and A6s are the best autox tire available, however the 710 is only 95% as fast as the A6. It will last almost twice as long in terms of heat cycles though if you're the kind of guy who heat cycles your tires before wearing them out.

Someone on the pelican board found info indicating they are changing the compound and tread design of the 710's. So they are probably just not taking new orders on the current tire. The new ones are supposed to come out 1/25/08.

Yep, I think that's probably why the existing V710's went back to their original beginning-of-year prices at places like Tire Rack so they could clear out stock of the original V710's to make way for the new ones.

You should check and see if the new Hankook Z214 in the soft compound (C70) is offered in your sizes. It's a great value and a solid performer at least as good as the 710 in early testing.

Matt,
I used to get 4 tires into my Targa to go to events.... 2 in the passenger seat and 2 on the rear seats. However, I used 225/50s all around on 7/8x15s and can't remember the diameters, but they fit laying flat on the passenger seat. You shouldn't need a trailer.
Agree - V710s are the best bang for the buck.

I see you are in Yonkers, I'm not far away and have some 245/45/16 Hoosier R6s in decent shape for cheap if you want to try them. Might have some 225/16s too but old ones, would throw them in. Email if interested. Also have some nice 225/45/15 (I use those on the front).

When I was shopping for my VictoRacers, Discount Tire called Kuhmo and was told they were out of stock in my size.
I called Tire Rack (A Rennlist sponsor) and was told they were in stock. They were delivered to my front door with in 48 hours.

I ordered a set of V710 in 205/50/15 for $122/ea, reduced from $187. I guess they are trying to liquidate and get ready for the new tire. Look for deals, there is nothing wrong buying the current gen V710, unless all your competitors are going to switch to the new V710 and there is a proven performance difference. Hell, I might even buy a 2nd set of V710s at this price, hehe.
