Question STU Boxster/Cayman Question

If the 997 is not moved to BS next year, I think I would like to sell it and build an STU Boxster.

On paper, the 987.2, 986.1, 986.2, 987.1, and 981 all seem like they would run within a couple tenths of each other (in that order). That's assuming they can all fit the same wheel and tire setup, they all respond about the same to ST* modifications, and they all have decent enough gear ratios. But I'd like to double check those assumptions. Also, the Cayman seems like it would be about 0.1 faster than the Boxster in each generation, but at a pretty significant price premium.

Questions:
  1. I saw somewhere that the 987.2 can fit a 9.5" front wheel and 11" rear wheel. Is that true for both Boxster and Cayman? And 987.1 also? And 986? And 981? I don't mind searching for the info, but maybe someone already knows the answer
  2. At least one of these has a really tall second gear, but I'm not sure which generation. Maybe the 981?
  3. Anything else that would give one of these generations a leg up on the others? Gearing issues? Differential? PDK? If you were starting from scratch, is 987.2 the obvious choice?
  4. 981 (non-S) seems like it would be the slowest of the bunch. Anybody think this would be a better choice? Maybe it can fit more tire?
  5. Does anyone have an STU-prepped car they might sell in the spring?
  6. Does anyone want to buy my 997.2 C4S PDK?
Thanks in advance for any guidance

Personally I don’t think it’s a good time to jump on an ST Porsche. With the class names and wheel sizes hanging in the balance it’s too risky to get in a class that has rules balanced by the SEB right now. Get yourself a turbo GTS, and run XA. You can do whatever you want to the car and be more competitive at non SCCA events if you want to try to play at king of the mountain or something. I just can’t understand the scca model: buy an older / less desirable car because it’s cheap, spend a ton of money on mods that can not be resold, spend a bunch of money bringing the older car up to spec.. then sell the car and lose a ton of money. If you want a good long term outlook on not losing your money, get a GT4..

981 SST is a bunch of fun without a ton of parts, but I’m afraid the SEB is about to ruin that, and zero chance of keeping up with grant reeves in a z06

Yeah definitely don't do anything until the st restructure gets sorted out hopefully next month.

I don't know too many specifics outside of the 981 but the newer cars generally have better/easier wheel/tire fitment as the cars are designed around bigger wheels. That said you can probably fit just about anything on any car, it'll just require sacrifices elsewhere, especially ride height.

Along similar lines, the newer cars generally have more power but longer gears. But maybe there's some outlier, you'd have to do some research to figure that out. The 981 and 987.2 have the pdk, which is probably what you want if you're looking for outright speed. Without doing much investigation I would think the 987.2s would be the best choice, with the base 981 a close second. That's assuming they all stay in the same class next year.

Thanks for the replies. I was oblivious to the potential ST reorg. I guess I'll have to go read some Fastracks.

@Auto_Werks 3.6 If I head down the SST path, I think it would have to be in an Elise... but really I would rather not have to compete against anymore Z06s
