Default The right audio set up for a 88 911 Cabrio

Hi all,
I just purchased this 88 911 black cabrio with 65k miles on her and she is in pristine shape. Although she still has her original radio, I am looking for something more modern. I will keep the original radio but am looking for suggestions for a head unit, sub woofer, amplifier and speakers and want to spend in the $2-$3k range if possible. Thanks for your suggestions.

I would suggest you seek out a local specialist, as you don't want any hacks working on your car. Ask to see pics of cars they have worked on. All good shops will have these. You have a decent budget to do a nice little system. As for brands etc, stick with high end brands, and you will get great (long lasting) results
hope it helps

Tim does your car have rear seats, or the cubby ? I have done systems in 911s before but a cabrio has different issues to a hard top. What is ideal is what's known as a slot loaded sub box. This helps disperse the bass into the cabin rather than the sky.

One of the systems I did, I custom made a sub box for a high excursion 8" sub(Phoenix Gold Xmax) behind the passenger seat. This involved making a fibreglass box that was literally molded to the shape of the footwell/rear seat. It's not a job for an amatuer. I had to cover the area with plastic(from garbage bags). Put in a couple of layers of FG, and then make rest of box, using FG and MDF out of the car. The box was then covered in genuine carpet(by a pro trimmer). It was a very small box but feeding the high excursion sub lots of power meant it still had great output. In that car we just used some nice 6inch splits behind factory grills. New HU was a becker so was totally stealth

No worries. How's it going your way with the "Tiger" influx for the next 2 weeks? Glad he's there and not here!

Tigers visit isn't a big deal here for most ppl, except for all the local golfers obviously. Bit of media fuss when he arrived but otherwise wouldn't even know he was here.

Drove it home last week (see trip thread in 911 Forum). So far just put a Kenwood unit in the dash to accommodate my iPhone/iPod. Will do more later after a set of tires and new battery are bought. Happy Holidays.

Tim,
buddy of mine here in Dallas has your identical car. (well, actually an 89)
Alpine head unit. He has 2 way boston setup front and back. I think they are 5 1/4 with separate tweets. Looks stock in the doors, looks aftermarket in the rear, but really nicely done.

10 inch bazooka under hood and a 5 way amp there as well. Has a bass adjustment **** on the dash. His car has one of the best sounds i've heard and is relatively stealth.
