Default Home theater 3.1 sound bars?

We have a Pioneer Kuro (50#) at each house. One has the Sony HT-CT100, which is adequate for our old ears watching Blue Ray movies. It's discontinued amd I'm probably going to get the HT-CT150, which is a bit of a pain, since the new model has the IR receiver on the sub, meaning it can't be hidden.
My question is, is there anything else I should look at in the sub-$300 - 400 range? I know these aren't as "good" as a 5.1 system, but it's impractical for our bedroom (even with wireless rear speakers). We're 11 feet from the screen in a 14X18 room.
Thanks.

The Bose Cinemate or the 3-2-1 systems are "3.1" and might work, depending on room size/shape.
If you know a Bose employee, they get very substantial discounts...or you can find these on eBay for similar prices.

As for the IR, a simple IR extender would allow you to hide your sub module and still keep the remote working

I listened to the Bose Cinemates next to the Sony in a shop when I bought the first sound bar. The Sony sounded better to me, for $800 less! Even the salesman admitted he was surprised how "not good" the Bose sounded. Might have been placement (?), but Bose isn't on my list. Thanks, though!

It just makes your TV sound good and it's simple.

Regarding the discontinued Sony, are there any Sony factory outlets near you?
There is one about 25 minutes from my house (big factory outlet plaza) and they often have NIB discontinued items at a discount.
Worth a try perhaps.

Friends don't let friends buy Bose.

Years back, an engineer at Bose said "no one is going to spend $500 for a CD clock radio".

Millions of units later, the Wave Radio still sells.

Now, it's the Bose TV ($5300 for a46" LCD):

A marketing machine, to say the least.

There's nothing near me (and I generally like it that way). I don't know much, but I have come to believe Bose is grossly overpriced. The cinemate sounded awful at any price, let alone $1K. I looked at the Boston Acoustics website and, without hearing them, I wouldn't pay the same (or more) than for the Sony. I guess I'll order the 150 and stick it at the farm, where it won't matter if the sub sits out in view. Thanks, all...

The force is strong with this one. The weak minded love the stuff.
