Replacing PCM3.1 with Erisin Android head unit DIY
(for 991/981/718 models)
I have an absolutely useless PCM3.1 in my 981S, and it was depressing from the get go. Every winter during my Boxster's hibernation I wanted to throw that pathetic POS PCM into the trash and replace with something nice, but every time I checked there were no units that would tick every box in my virtual checklist for ideal unit.
Well, when I checked this year - it looks like there is finally a unit, that on paper does absolutely everything I wanted. The biggest requirements

I did not see manual, and have absolutely no idea how hard it will be to install, but how hard can it be, right?
DIY to follow
So no matter how busy I am, I decided it's time to stop being

- Navigation and music library without phone
- wireless Android auto
- wifi internet + movies
- mechanical *****
- perfect fit with matching bezel

Unit arrived about a week later. From Hong Kong. No installation manual. But lots of connectors.
Installation was a breeze. 5 minutes and done! You basically need to take off two central console side trim pieces, and after that you will see 4 screws for radio. Unscrew and remove the radio. There are two connectors in the back. (of my basic 981S PCM3.1). The big one pops after you lift the "handle". The two-wire one - you need to press beige tab with some small screwdriver and it will release, so you can pull it out.
You don't need to remove anything else, like gearshift. I just did it because I have more upgrades coming.
The Erisin unit uses same connectors, so just pop them in, and THAT'S IT. I will still need to add GPS antenna, USB, and camera. But for now I just wanted to test it.
Units fires right up when you turn the ignition, a minimal setup and it's good to go. Connected to my home wifi without any fuss,
1. Nav works, and you can choose from many nav apps ( I chose google). After you add antenna (included, just need to place it somewhere) - the Nav should work with no phone/wifi.
2. Radio works and (big surprise) it's MUCH nicer sound than stock radio! Didn't tried all the radio buttons yet. The left **** is volume, the right **** changes stations. Real *****!, working as it should be in ideal world! Huge relief.
3. Screen is super responsive, no lag at all
4. Fired youtube and played the videos. Looks good
5. The whole unit looks good. Bezel color seem to be complete match in the garage lighting. We'll see how it looks outside with top down. It looks good in a car. I think it doesn't look out of place (like most aftermarket units). If you don't know what stock PCM looks like - you might very well think it's stock.
6. The backlight come on when you turn ignition to pos II, with the rest of car electronics. You can change colors in setup or turn it off. When you pick white - it come greenish. I played with manual RGB setup and was able to make it somewhat better white. We will see if it will bother me.
7. There is storage on the unit, so you should be able to load music and movies if you wish to. Description says "64GB ROM, 3 USB up to 3*128GB extended Storage. "
All in all I'm very impressed. It's better than I expected and steal for this price.
General look and fit:
2 connectors in the back
short movie video (there is still factory film protector on the screen):

Bose PC001 Optical Adapter
991.1 911 with Bose system, I guess I have to buy the optical adapter to add to the HU? Is it easy to install?
1. For the Erisin head unit itself, what’s with the wires that have all the RCA ends to it?
2. Is there anything that is missing from the 3.1 PCM to this upgrade, like do the steering wheel controls still work etc?
Thanks!
