My indie did my key, but he has a pwis, which is all you need. Took 10 mn max.
So can I have an indie reprogram an used key remote to work with my car? I already have the key blade cut for my door lock and ignition? If so I would save $192 dollars on a new remote. There is an indie by my house that charges $80 to program keys. I would just transfer the "chip" from the used key to a new remote case and just attach the new key blade. Any answers would be great.
If your new remote case already has the transponder chip, no need to transfer the chip, just need the reprogram. There are some pretty detailed posts in this forum with good pictures on how to transfer the chip if in fact you need to do that. You'll have to search - sorry don't remember who or when.

The key I have now is used and from another Porsche 997. I bought it from eBay. I want to take the chip from the used remote and the internals and transfer to the brand new Porsche key case. My question is can the used chip be reprogrammed for the car even though it was programmed to another car already?

I asked the same question as I have 2 working but used transponders (key blades too but need to be replaced for my car). Same thing, got them off of Ebay from a locksmith.
Although I haven't attempted to reprogram, i've been told a few things that don't instill confidence. I've been told this by an Indy that has PIWIS and reprograms keys and also on this board.
1. You can only reprogram a key that was already programmed if you have the code (it is long unique code) that comes with the key when new. If you don't have it, no go.
2. It isn't possible at all.
I didn't receive the code(s) with the 2 keys I bought. But at the same time I never took it in for them to try since the Indy wanted $135 to do it. If I am going to end up spending that much just for programming, I might as well have a key and blade that I know are going to work.
Please update this thread and let me know if you hear or find out otherwise!!

contacted a eBay seller who is selling new remote key heads and they also are a Porsche dealer and they said the remotes don't come with the unique number and that an indie or dealer could program the keys to work with my car.
Oh, yeah, I think it is different if they are new keys that have not been programmed before. For keys that were previously coded to a cat you need those unique codes to reprogram, supposedly....

There is no unique number that comes with the keys even from the dealerships new. indie/dealerships can enter into the pwis and go into the learn program and the keys will work. I just got the info from my indie.

Not sure about used, when I did it, I bought a new key from suncoast(with my vin) then had the indie program it with his pwis.

The only reason why the dealerships asks for the vin# I been told is to get the right style key. My friend who has been doing work on my cars for years told me that all the indie needs is ipas code to get into my car and then have the car learn the chips within the different remotes. Dealerships won't do that cause they rather sell you a brand new key at $192.00. Also I have checked with two different dealerships about the remote coming with an unique number that needs to be entered in to the car via pwis to be able to mate the remotes to the car and was told that the 997 remotes do not come with that like the 996 did. Once the pwis is hooked to the computer there is a section which is called " learning" and that's where the keys are able to be programmed. I will let everyone know when I drop it off and have the keys programmed. It's going to be a bit as I have a few other projects going on with my car lol.

Did you ever get it done?
I got my keys and blade separately, then took them to the dealer to program. All 3 keys work to start the car but the fobs do not. The dealer spent a couple hours trying to get them to work to no avail. They are suggesting that the keys might need replacement... I feel like I read somewhere else on this site that someone in a similar predicament was able to resolve it through a hokey pokey dance and a gig. Anyone know the dance moves that need to be performed?
