Default 997.1 vs. 997.2 exhaust note

After driving both .1 and .2 cars, I've noticed a difference in stock exhaust note. 997.2 is more muted and not as raw sounding... albeit both are nowhere close to NA cars.

Is the difference due to engine only (Mezger vs. DFI)? or has there been a change in exhaust design, more muffler, or differences in CAT?

Thanks

The exhaust design is definitely different, as is the entire engine, so you would expect them to sound totally different...

The dealer says that the 997.2 is louder then the 997.1 apparently owners complained that the 997.1 was to quiet.

I am told that the 997.1 exhaust is easy to modify however similar to the 997 Carrera.

Rock thats a good photo

Alex,

The 997.2 turbo motor is significantly quieter than the 997.1 turbo. It has to do with the new DFI motor design. We have had to go to a 3" exhaust with muffler delete to get appreciable sound out of the 997.2TT - The 997.1TT with the same 3" X-Pipe is considerably louder. With stock exhausts, they are both relatively quiet...it's when you go to an aftermarket system that the differences really show up.

I was also told the .2 is quieter than the .1. On my .2 I tried a few exhaust systems which were all too quiet for me and didn't sound as good as their .1 equivalents. I ended up going with the Sharkwerks bypass which eliminates the mufflers. Car sounds great now.

Yes, exactly. On the 997.2TT you must remove the muffler completely and use muffler bypass pipes in order to achieve a sport sound level. We found a 3" X-Pipe made the most and best sound on the .2TT

Thanks. Is it possible to improve 997.1 exhaust tone without too much work then? I personally don't like aftermarket exhaust and like things to stay as stock as possible but is it possible to just change the CAT or muffler or whatever and keep the rest of the stock exhaust, yet make it just that tad bit louder?

On the 997.1tt the cats and muffler are all one piece, so that is not possible. On the 997.2tt they are separate components and it's an option that many owners choose.

Take a look underneath and you'll see that a lot of "plumbing" work would be needed to modify stock system - integrated cats are the stumbling block.

Yes, Fvd makes just such a system, had it on my last car. Sounded great. They basically change the cats and a few minor internal mods to your stock core.

By the way, has anyone installed or been in a car with Akrapovič exhaust? I know they're ridicolously expensive, but I am really curious if it's that much better than other options out there.
