Both cars, 996TT and 997.1 TT are amazing cars. The 996TT is the best value right now, lot of car for the money.
Even though both were similarly priced when new, the 996 depreciated a lot faster in 10 years than the 997. On their low end, an 02 TT would fetch mid to upper 20's in 2012 on the low end while an 07 TT fetches mid to upper 50's in 2016.
I do believe 996 TT's are absolutely undervalued for what they are, and should appreciate some, but, the 997.1TT fills that gap between "too raw" and the "too refined", its just right.

Very well said, maybe the best summary with respect to the current economics for the 996 and 997.
I continue to hunt for a 2011-12 997 TTS w/PDK, but have considered purchasing a 996TT until I find the right TTS. I thought I had a beautiful 2011 TTS in my hands, but the seller decided to keep her, which I don't blame him. So, the search goes on...
Well done above! JB

I feel the exact opposite...I think the 997TT is the best value right now. For the most part, clean 996TT's are fetching 50k now and I don't think you can compare the two for the extra 12-15k the 997TTs are getting. At 40k I will agree with you, but folks selling the 996TTs want 50k now! There are a few around 40k...in which case I agree with you, but you need to get a 996TT around 40k to make it a winner over the 997TT (in my opinion).

I'm debating between 996TT and 997TT now, but can't make up my mind. The longer I wait, the closer the gap is becoming, and while I wanted to snag a 996TT in the high 30's (lonng gone now), there are some 997TT's right around 60k which is making the decision difficult.

Hard decision for a turbo buyer looking to spend around 50k...as you could save 10k and pick up a 996TT or spend an extra 10k and grab an 997TT...

As I read over my post I realized I sound like Bruce Jenner 24 months ago...quite evident I don't know which way to go! Leaning towards 997TT, but there is a ton of value in the 996TT.

So much comes down to finding the right car too...while you might like one over the other, if the opportunity presents itself to purchase either (997 or 996) car at the right price...you're obliged to buy. Buying a used car of this caliber requires finding the RIGHT one that was used but not abused and maintained properly. In my opinion patience pays and when the right one comes, whether it be 996TT or 997TT, just be ready to pull the trigger.

Concur, I invested 1.5 year searching for the 09 997TT 6 Speed I just sold. After buying it in Dec I found that a previous military back injury raised its ugly head operating the clutch. So, now searching for a 2011 to 12 TTS. But, while I'm looking a 996 TT Tip could fill the gap...JB

I like your style! I am looking for 6spd, but I would go PDK without batting an eyelid as I live in Miami and there's no shortage of traffic here. Only problem is that I am looking to stay around $60k and I won't find an 09' PDK for $60k.

I'd still prefer a 996TT for $35k...let me know if you find one!

Mezger M64; doesn't that answer the question?

I've owned both and both are gobs of fun. While I thoroughly enjoyed my 996, in my view, the 997 is simply a better car on the whole. Better and higher quality interior, better exterior styling, better handling characteristics and newer technology all around. If you go auto, PDK is superior to Tip. Both share DNA in motor package (one of best engineered motors on the planet). 996 are great cars and a good value but 997 is better in my view (improving upon the previous models...its what Porsche does). However, I can assure you that neither disappoints. Good luck.

Sorry everyone, I didn't realize that this thread took off after the fact! I made a few offers on some P cars and never quite found the right one, then I discovered the Exige and it was all over from there. I think I bought one ~ 10 days after I posted this.

Just saw this thread when I logged in to ask a question in the HPDE forum. Thanks for all the inputs!
