Default DFI or Mezger...?

I am on the market for a 997TT. Currently an 996TT owner. I love the durability of a Mezger and had my mind wrapped around buying a mezger 997TT but now there is a 2010 DFI verision that is in my budget range. I did some searching but found very little about DFI engines on rennlist.

Is there any issues I should know when deciding wether to spend money on DFI over Mezger? After all DFI is a cheaper engine to manufacture, that is the reason Porsche discontinued the Mezger. DFI turbos have been around for over 5 years now, there must be something?

The DFI turbo I am looking at right now has 55tmiles on it. I know gen 2 has many pro´s over gen 1 but how about the cons?

You won't hear any complaints from me, except for the relatively lame exhaust sound, which is something you obviously can modify if desired. I love my 2010 and have no regrets getting this one over the older Mezger.

Again, there is no bad choice, but the power of this thing is unreal, and while there is lag, it's pretty discrete in the lower gears.

Regarding "cons"; it's hard to say if the 911 has any. We know which 911 we want, and we know the characteristics of that particular model. Unless you're willing to spend on that classic one you dream of, get the latest one you can afford.

Make sure to share the pics when you pick it up.

If you want like 800hp go mezger and weld coolant pipes. If you want only 600-650 go DFI. The only con of Gen 2 to Gen 1 is HP. Other than that it is all pro no con.

If you Are you planning on heavy performance modding, stick to .1 , otherwise you should be happy either way performance wise. Havent heard of any issues on the .2's other than the Hydraulic spoiler ram problem which plagues all 997 and 996 TTs. Good luck and post pics if you pull the trigger!

I agree with the previous comments. High horsepower, .1. Reasonable horsepower, .2. Exhaust note is very lame however so I went with an after market system. I haven't had a problem with my 2010. Goodluck!

I prefer the mezger because it has a long racing heritage, traced directly back to the 3.0 930 turbo and the LeMans winning race cars....unlike the dfi 9a1, which is a great engine, just yet to be proven in the high level racing series.
To me, that's the whole 9 yards, the modability is irrelevant.

While I have not yet bought a DFI engine I would have no qualms owning a 997 Turbo with the DFI engine. I have been more than pleased with my experience with the Mezger engine in my 2003 Turbo but do not feel compelled to stick with this engine going forward.

Regarding suitability to mod'ing for more power... There have been a number of owners who have mod'd the Mezger engine only to see it blow up. The engine is a good engine, but it is only as good as its weakest part. At some level of HP the rods are just not up to the task.

'course there are owners who have managed to extract impressive HP from the Mezger engine with (so far) good reliability.

Since mod's are not in my next car's future, I would probably just focus on finding the best car for the money. If this proved to be a 997 Turbo fitted with a Mezger engine, fine. If it proved to be a DFI engine, that's fine too.

Get the DFI, no over rev discussions from the so called "experts" on this forum. If you get the 997.1 you will have to deal with the over rev "experts". That alone for me is a deal breaker. Can't stand them.

I had no idea!
That said I bought my car because of the gt1 block! Dry sump for the win!

I wonder if the same manual trans is used for the dfis...
