997 tt manual transmission
So i am looking for 2007 - 2009 997 TT.
I currently have a 997.2 with MT.
I see that most TT are with automatics and for the years I am looking at tiptronics.
I really am a MT person, but is there a reason why most TT are automatics?
Is the HP of the TT such that a MT is either a reliability problem or is there some other reason?

I prefer the 6MT also and I searched until I found one that I wanted.
The only reasons that I've heard that people like the Tiptronic are:
1. The Tiptronic cars are actually quicker than the 6MT cars because they shift faster and they don't lose boost during gear changes.
2. The turbo revs to redline so fast (especially in 1st gear) that you can't shift fast enough. You hit redline so fast that you almost can't shift fast enough without hitting the rev limiter when starting off at WOT from a stop.
3. Many people ordered the TT as a GT car and wanted the convenience of an automatic.
If you really want a manual transmission, then keep looking and you'll find one.

The only reason I'd consider a tip is if I lived in LA and had to sit in traffic for 2 hours a day. Otherwise you're missing half the fun in my personal opinion.
I've driven the 997.1 tip, the 997.1 manual, and the 997.2 PDK. The PDK is really good and the only auto I'd consider.
I had trouble with the stock tune when test driving the 997.1 TT manual because the boost builds so late. Typically you don't really hit the power until 4k. By the time you hit the boost you run up to red line really fast. Also you lose boost with a MT when you shift so if you're an aggressive driver your passenger may feel like they're a headbanger at a rock concert when you're changing in and out of gears.
Test drive both and see which one you like. The tip is my least favorite and would rather have a 6 speed 997.2 s like you have than a tip turbo.
PS-There's no reliability problem with the MT whatsoever. There are a lot of high hp manual cars out there. If you tune the turbo you can get a better linear power delivery and more enjoyment from the car.

I came from a 997.2 PDK C4S and now own a TT 6MT and cannot imagine driving without it...I have never driven a TT Tiptronic but there is just somehting special about banging through the gears keeping the car in boost...what a friggin RUSH!!!

I havent noticed the majority being automatics.....
Both configurations are good.
Tippy for those who dont want to 3 pedal around town and keep their right hand free.
Stick for those who like a classic manual experience and rowing through the gearbox.
Manuals tend to hold better resale because the car is a 911 and not a prius.
PDK automatic in the 2010+ models is awesome. I would have a hard time saying no to a PDK car... i would need a manual car in the stable to make up for it.

997/1 turbo: around 65% are tiptronic
This will only increase with time. 997/1 mezger manual is a top candidate for ultimate collectability. In a decade or so they'll be hard to find as few will come on to the market.

Wow ~65%!! I guess that's why it took me so long to find my 09 6MT with PCCBs.

There were only 321 couples and 551 cabs sold in the 09 calendar year. Porsche doesn't report sales by model year or transmission type. In any case 09's are very rare as they were transitioning to the 997.2. Given that tips were in the majority, it makes the manuals really rare. Combine that with the fact that most people interested in two pedals want a PDK car rather than a tip making tips relatively more available. 6 speeds being in higher demand tend to sell quickly making it look like just about every 09 for sale is a tip equipped car.

Don't laugh, if you car is well equipped and in good condition that price isn't out of the ballpark. 09's with manual will hit the bottom of the price curve before other 997.1's I suspect.....

08's are also holding their own in the $75-80K range and 07's are doing well in the $65-75K range.
Although not "collectible" but highly desirable in the future (IMO +/- 10 years) the 07-09's TT's are the next 930 turbo and 95-97 993 turbo (last of the air cooled) both of which appear to be appreciating nicely. JMO

When I was searching for my 997.1 TT cabriolet I did come across a press release from Porsche that said that only 300 cabriolets were sold in the US as 2008 models and none were sold as 2007 models. Add those to the number you quoted and that means that only 851 997.1 TT cabriolets were sold in the US in total. No wonder it was difficult to fine one with a 6MT, PCCBs and in a color other than silver, gray or black!
