Those of you wondering if or when your coolant hose connections might fail, here are some pics of the repair on my car. There's also a few pics of the IPD Plenum install along with gt3 TB.

I was at an event a couple of weeks ago and two Turbos experienced coolant pipe failure. There were two others there; one had been pinned and the other was not being run, so 100% failure on that day (probably an exception to the rule).

Btw, there was a Carrera GT in for a bad fuel pump while I was there. If they couldn't free the fuel pump it was going to need a new fuel tank as part of the r&r. Price for just the tank..... wait for it.... $17,000. And that doesn't include chopping the car in half to get the job done.

Before you tackle it yourself, you might want to contact PCNA. I filed a complaint and they called and asked for my receipt from the repair. Not sure if they will help but it's worth a try. When I talked to them they said they never heard of this happening on a 911 before. I said really, go browse the forums and you'll find it everywhere. I wonder if so many people had this job done under aftermarket warranty it hasn't raised enough red flags with them.

so is it faster with the plenum and throttle body?

Good question, I'm racing it tonight so will report numbers here when I return. It's hot and humid today so am not sure what to expect, but I will use a DA adjustment as well as report raw numbers.

I gotta say, I see how people swear by the butt-dyno. The car definitely feels quicker in the 30-120 range, but it could just be projection bias. We'll see how that translates in an actual quarter mile.

can this be seen from the engine bay looking under the hood or does the car have to be on a lift?

You can't see anything from the top and very little from the bottom. Obviously it's easy to spot the coolant leak on the ground, but the shop had to begin pulling the engine before they could really see what was going on. I believe there are 6 connections on the 997.1tt and that doesn't include the tank reservoir which also might crack and leak. You can see the deteriorating epoxy in the pics. I don't think there's anything particularly different about my car which would make the epoxy fail like that, so as far as those who say it's an isolated problem, we'll see. I have a PhD in systems engineering with a focus on reliability so I've seen this routine many times before in other systems. We'll see how this plays out for Porsche and the other 997.1 owners.

BTW, I spoke to the folks at mid-ohio and they will not let a 996/997tt run on their track unless it's had the coolant hoses fixed (pinned or welded, or running distilled water). Funny how they recognize the pattern but Porsche hasn't... yet. :-)
