Default What oil ?

Have no Porsche dealership in my city. Just got car on road now and haven't had to put in oil yet.
So what to run for oil . Talking only drive it spring/summer/fall with temps around 40 degrees and up. Vehicle is stored winter months. So run what mobile one? What grade?

Mobil 5W50, In Europe the Porsche factory fill is Mobil 1 5W50

You don't have to worry about the colder temp unless you drive the car below 20F.

AllanB, I spent some time in and out of Vancouver in early 2000 and there was a great car culture up there. I vaguely recall some really good independent speed shops...a lot of rice but pcars too I think...not sure the distance to you...

Leo the formulations have changed.. I have run, tested and mixed weights with the 300V, and my results weren't as good as Mobil 1 5W50.. Look at the test spec sheets with the oils that you want to run. Pay attention to the Viscosity Index.. Study your oils before you make the switch..

Post the Spec sheets and let us compare the Penzoil against the Mobil 5W50.. Why are you running a XW40 weight in California??? Temp and traffic, push you right into the 5W50.. Folks the 40 weight oils sheer in these engines with the mileage that most of you guys run.

Kevin, do you still recommend Mobil TDT 5W-40 for our cars?

Boeing 717 Mobil 1 5W50 is the only oil available. Napa will bring it in for you.

Lexart, I usually mention that "IF" your engine is shedding metal particles that you physically see in your oil filter. AND if your IMS and chain noise is loud, run the Mobil TDT 5W40. Many folks find it easier to find Rotella T6 5W40, if so run Shell Rotella T6 5W40.

I need to clarify the metal that one might see. As the engine wears, if you see 0 to 5 particles.. This is normal. If you see more than 5, reduce your mileage between oil changes. If the trend increases, you might want to consider moving to TDT or Rotella T6.. The reason for this change, is the two mentioned oils have higher metal conditioning packages and higher ZDDP.. Thus metal conditioner to reduce the engine wear..

Kevin, thank you for your detailed and through response. I've used Mobil 1 TDT 5W-40 oil in past three oil changes. I think I'll be switching to Mobil 1 5W-50 as my car's chain noise is not that pronounced, although TDT oil did quiet it down a bit. My motor is also not shedding much metal. I've cut and examined filters in last three oil changes and saw a single tiny aluminum flake once. Again, thank you for your informative post . . .
