We used steam cleaning in machine tool reconditioning. Used it to remove years (decades) of grime and paint, sometimes several layers of paint.

The steam cleaning process left water in between machine tool castings and in between machine ways. But since the machine was going to be torn down anyway there was no real concern.

I might use steam cleaning to remove mold/mildew from basement concrete walls but I wouldn't use a steam cleaner on my Porsches.

When Jay Leno steam cleans his Ford GT40 or his Carrera GT let me know.
