Potential Owner - 997TT track questions
Hey Guys,
I am a current BMW M car owner, and am ready to take a step up and add a 911. I am considering the 997tt and the 997.1 gt3. My budget is around 70k, which puts me in the range for the 997 turbo, and slightly stretching for a gt3.
My goals for the car are to use it (for now) as a DD, and transition it into a weekend / track car in a couple years. For now, I don't need a lot of space as I am fairly young and have no kids.
I really like HPDE, and probably plan to hit 8-12 events per year. After having modded my M cars a bit, I really want something that other than maybe a couple tiny things (sway bars, etc) the car will be track ready with only track tires and race brake pads.
I also live in Houston, so the temps are very high.
Can the 997TT in stock form hold up to these events with no issues?
I have driven a decent amount in a tiptronic 997TT vert, and loved the way it felt and the power was incredible in stock form. I would be looking at a 6mt coupe myself.
Any feedback from those of you who do use the car as a dd, or as an HPDE car would be very helpful.
Right now a 997TT is at the top of my list.

Hey Bluecrab! My 2 cents: for HPDE get the GT3 and for DD get the 7TT. Two cars!
DD means different things to different people. Houston traffic can be really bad, just not sure how far you have to commute? I have never owned a GT3 but own/owned 2 GT2s and they are similar beasts with heavy clutches, low(er) ride height, ground scrapers, more jarring suspension, tire noise, etc...once the honey moon ends you may start thinking about something else for DD...
You really have to decide how far/how much DD you will do versus how much HPDE you will do and how serious you want to get into it...It is all about making compromises with one car!
If I read your post right, you want to start with a car for DD first, and then migrate to HPDE? So my recommendation is the TT which is a more civilized car and that is what I use for DD.
PS1: On the 997GT2/GT3 forums there a couple of recent threads from fellows asking about the GT3 for DD. You should check those out and you will see the same comments.
PS2: For $70K you should get nice/long test drives in both and decide.
Good luck.

I am pretty much sold on the 997tt at this point, right now I am perusing for the right one, and prepping my car for sale.
To clarify what I would like to use the car for..........for now, a DD and car that I can use for HPDE events. My commute to work is less than 2 miles, and I don't put tons of mileage on my cars. I eventually plan to pick up a more spacious and suitable DD, and use the 997tt for weekend / good weather as well as HPDE events. I wanted a car that in stock form is track ready.
My current car is turbocharged, so the torque and power of the 997tt appeals to me. I also love the look and feel of the car.
Hopefully I can find one in the coming weeks. My budget is in the ballpark of 70K, and I'm looking for a MT under 40k miles. Plenty to choose from it seems
Thanks again, and hope to be a member of the Porsche family soon!
EDIT : btw, incredible stable of cars you have. A GT2 would be a dream car for me, they are incredible!

There are several knowledgable Houston guys on this forum that own 997TTs and I am sure one of them will pipe up here and point you towards the right local car...
keep us posted...
The HPDE can be addicting...it always starts with the DD car doing some HPDE, then you need a more dedicted HPDE car that you can drive to the track, then a fully dedicated HPDE car that must be trailered to the track so you end up buying an open trailer and a used pick up truck, then you realize that your set up does not look cool so you buy a new truck with a matching aluminum enclosed trailer, and then you ask yourself "...what the heck am I doing spending all my money on this..." so you start looking for sponsors or charge things to the company...and it goes! I am about to start this cycle again after controllinng myself for the last 15 years!

Since you are going to track the car I would recommend getting this option as it helps settle the car down on lift-off, etc. I forget the locking %'s....

Only available on the 6MT (not on the wonderful Tip! ) as an option. The option code is "220" and it is a "locking rear diff". It shoud be on the window sticker and I believe that you can look at the transmission housing and decipher the codes.

I am looking at an atlas gray one in the northeast right now. my problem is id like to be able to trade my car in for tax benefits, so this puts me in a tough spot. just gotta be patient.

Check out Porsche of CO Springs (no affliliation; just know the shop); they have a nice '07TT in silver with low mileage for an "asking" $79K:

Call Joe Benner he is a good guy and knows/loves Porsches. He will do the long distance trade - just take lots of photos of your M and send him the pictures/documentation. Ship the car from Houston, and then fly in, enjoy CO and drive home!

what do you think about this car? seems a little dicey with the ECM being replaced and checked twice (see carfax). plus 3 owners. and who knows what else isn't on the carfax?

also considering this car

any thoughts would be great. I love the half alcantara seats on the first one and the steering wheel.

I would say ignore the "asking" price and plan on offering a lower but polite price. So on the $79K I would offer $71K with CPO and see where it goes! If you can get a CPO car it will be awesome.
IMHO1: The CT car has supple leather that I don't care for and reminds of a wrinkled suit pants, and I definitely do not like blue interior, carbon steering wheels tend to peel over time and it also does not seem to have the adaptive seats which some guys here tend to love. But I see the "sport shifter" which is nice... So this car is not for me.
IMHO2: The NC car definitely is up my alley with the alcantara inserts, steering wheel, etc...I would look for a lower mileage car if I could help it (but the mileage is really OK). I have been to this dealer as a friend of mine bought a car from them 10 years ago. You need to get the history on the car...ie) Was it a trade on a Ferrari?
Get them to send you all the carfax, history, ..., and send them your M info...

Good info, agree on the first one
Second one, car had mismatched tires and apparently brembo front brakes which needed new rotors. Guy said the car was in just ok condition, so it's a no go for me.
I'll call the dealer in Colorado. I love the gt3 style interior on that one in nc

Take a look at this

Just my $0.02... dont' settle on the car. I searched high and low...and high and low again for my turbo and believe I found the perfect one for me. although I wanted white but the GT silver really grew on me. Best on the search!
