Completely different engines from throttle body to pan. Most (90%) of the 997.2 TT engine is common with the 997.2 Carrera S engine. Only things in common for engines between the 997.1 TT and 997.2 TT are some of the exterior engine parts that include the turbos and the intercoolers. 07-09 are 997.1 while 10- are 997.2. Key notable exterior differences are the different taillights and rear bumpers.

Based on the availability of mods for the 997.1 Turbo, I'd say it was either easier or more popular to mod. (I'm going off what I see on good / reliable modders such as Sharkwerks, EVOMS, etc.)

997.1: Absolutely more durable/stronger engines capable of holding well over 1000bhp - these are the Mezger engines originally developed for the GT1 race cars. 997.2 have seen some issues with larger HP applications. I believe Champion Motorsport did a great write up where they saw the bending in the engine rods at close to 800bhp (If I recall correctly). Additionally 997.2 uses an "integrated dry sump" which is essentially a wet sump... among many other differences.

FYI 997.2 intercoolers are revised and way better at temp control than 997.1s. The 997.2 also uses a Borg Warner BV50 VTG turbo with a 2280 compressor wheel (45mm inducer) whereas the 997.1 uses a 2277 compressor wheel (43mm inducer).

True!! 997.2 GT2 intercoolers have a much higher heat transfer efficiency than the 997.1, and outperform (lower temps) almost all aftermarket IC's (that retail for triple the price). The caveat is that they flow the same amount of air as the 997.1 (so for higher HP applications ~700+, where more air is required these would not suffice as they "plug", require much pressure to flow air through them).
That said it's very common to upgrade the 997.1 IC's to 997.2, especially at just over $1000 for a set if you're running under ~700.
...but I'm getting a little off topic

I can't recall any info confirming the new gen 2 turbo engine is not as strong as the gen 1. Any info on that? Link etc?
I'm aware the mod potential is limited in gen 2 cars with the PDK as it has HP limitations as per CMS's report.
