Default PDK

Are there any owners that have had a 6speed, upgraded to a newer car with PDK and prefer the PDK? Or are there any who made the same switch but miss their 6 speed?

There are so many more of the 09 10 11s with PDKs. I havn't even seen a 6spd 10 or 11 for sale. I have always imagined my 911 would have a 6 speed, but it seems we are at a technological crossroads of sort.

I do know the PDKs are faster. But there was a poster who stated once, that using manual and paddleshifting was exhilerating, yet he found him self more often than not putting it in auto (or whatever you call that mode). He felt that was a shame and I think it is too.

The 09's had the tip auto trans., not pdk, and it was faster than the 6spd by a hair too. There's a few of them out there for sale now, and not as desirable as the 6spd cars, especially with the intro of the pdk trans.. Personally I think there's nothing better than the gt1 block mated to the 6spd for fun factor and involvement in the driving experience.
I agree that the new technologies are taking us away from that particular enjoyable driving experience in most new cars, which is a shame.

I was in my new to me 07 turbo with a GF last night. She was suprised I was so smooth with a manual shift car. I drove one every day for 20 years. She assumed that since my SL was an automatic it was all I could drive. A sign of the times indeed. I passed on a Turbo S because of the PDK.

My last four sports cars were manuals and I don't miss it at all. I have an 11 turbo S and I love the pdk with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. I can blast through the gears with the flick of a finger. I drive the car around town/in traffic/daily driver and pdk makes it a pof (piece of cake) . Bottom line, test drive them both and go with what pleases you.

PDK debut was in '09, the first year of the second gen 997. So '09 does not have tip.

I have a new turbo arriving any day with all the options included on an S except it is a manual. I opted to pay more just to have a manual transmission after driving both. The PDK is no doubt faster, but it doesn't provide the same level of enjoyment for me. I believe the PDK is a great transmission but I don't believe its purpose was to make all of us faster. Porsche knew that if they came out with a transmission that could appeal to both the aggressive driver who wanted to shift and yet appease those who want to put it in drive and not think about the rest they could sell more cars. If the PDK is the pinnacle of performance driving why not put it in the GT2RS and GT3RS aside from the obvious differences in the engine generation? I read post after post expressing angst about leaving behind a manual and I for one don't want to spend over 100k on a car and have regrets. Sure the guy next to me can smoke me 0 to 60 with a PDK launch control but seriously that is for teenagers and the visceral experience for me is in the old fashioned shift and clutch requiring some skill and precision. I sound like a geezer at 42.

Buy the car based upon your gut and not what somebody else claims is the latest and greatest.

I sold a 2008 Viper and 2009 Corvette ZR1 ,both six speeds to get a 2011 997 Turbo S Coupe.I am done shifting. That PDK with launch control makes everything else obsolete.Car is insane out of the hole.Love it. First Porsche for me.

Do you want to take the car for a ride, or do you want the car to take you for a ride?

PDK does not mate to the GT1 derived engine which is why it is not fitted to cars using that engine. The next gen cup cars will use PDK. My RS is a 6 spd, my 4S DD is a PDK and I love it. If the next RS has PDK, I'll buy it. Love it on the race track. The Ferrari 458 and the race car version are all PDK - no manual option. Hope PAG provides the choice for those who prefer the manual box.

Default No PDK ever again for me

I had a 2003 996TT with 6-speed manual for 7 years. Last year I got intrigued by all the smoke and mirrors of the PDK marketing – test drove PDK C2S and Panamera, sold my Turbo, and bought 2011 Panamera. I liked Panamera as a new Porsche platform but the PDK drove me nuts. First the unpredictable acceleration from intersections when nothing happens after you step on the accelerator pedal for a fraction of second than the whole hell breaks loose as the PDK clanks into first and second gear. Second, I found manual shifting of PDK to be completely un-engaging. In fact I felt that the transmission behavior of a standard slash box in my wife’s MDX is better suited for driving in traffic than PDK.

Three weeks ago I sold Panamera and yesterday took delivery of a White 2011 997TT with 6-speed manual. I am so excited to be back into manual Turbo – it is like coming home. No PDK ever again for me.

We all like different things. For me the rush of a nearly instantaneous upshift without coming off boost more than makes up for losing the joy of a perfect heel toe downshift. Turbo'd cars and double clutch transmissions are like peas and carrots imho.
