So just to make sure I have my terminology correct:

M97 = 997.1 Carrera
M64 = 997.1 Turbo/GT3/RS/GT2, 997.2 GT3/RS
9A1 (or A91?) = 997.2 Carrera/Turbo
Thats right...

The main benefit other than reliability for these engines was that they were designed to be stripped down and refreshed to new as required by race teams for competition rather than being made as a cast unit intended for a certain lifespan and subsequent trashed (modern engines).

Other differences:
- M64 true dry sump, external tank (as per race cars), 9A1- not dry sump, oil reservoir integrated into block, similar to wet sump
-M64 servicable bottom end- removable cylinder liners etc for stripping down, 9A1- traditional cast block with Lokasil, if rebuilding, it must be boredout- limited life for this reason esp in racing applications
-M64 proven race reliabilty (24hr enduros etc) and highly tunable- aftermarket tuning exceeding 1000bhp- main recent issue, some GT variants prone to RMS issue. 9A1- no race history therefore no comment. Not much aftermarket tuning available yet so tunability unkown

Whether the new motor will meet or exceed the standards set by thw Metzger, only time will tell but it won't be easy.
great info here

Based on this thread I'm assuming 2009 turbos are equpped with the 9a1, is that correct? So no PDK with the mezger turbo?

I believe it was 2010 actually, even though the regular car was 2009.

US MY 2009 was a transitional year for the turbo. It had some of the 997.2 upgrades, but it retained the Mezger/M64 engine. It could be had in 6MT or Tiptronic; no PDK.

Ok perfect, so the 09 has the new interior but retains the mezger, nice! Might be the one to get!

Check out the 991 GT3 threads...9A1 engines are being replaced all over again, this time due to premature valve wear...tick, tick boom!

Correct! The interior upgrades are: PCM 3.0, black plastic instead of gray plastic on the center stack, and optional ventilated seats. It also has the option for center lock wheels.

Many people consider it quite desirable.

With the recent appreciation of the GT2, the next one to go up significantly will be the 07-09 997.1 turbos. The most significant of these will be the 2009 turbo imo.

May seem like a daft question......

Can a wet sump be used in a race engine?

I thought the dry sump thing was to mitigate any oil starvation when hitting high G's on the track?

Hold on to your MT Mezger. Whether 996 or 997.

Collectors know these are next to be collectibles. Drive them now and bring them to the bank in 5 years.

That's one of the advantages of a dry sump. Others include greater oil capacity and an ability to set the engine lower improving the center of gravity. You also have the risk of the oil frothing under high revs in a wet sump. You can certainly race with a wet sump engine but all things being equal a dry sump system is much better.

I like my 9A1 just as much as my Mezger. The 991 GT3 issues stem from the diamond like coating on the finger followers not holding up on earlier models. PAG is aware. Doesn't bother me as my 14 has a 100k engine warranty.
