Default Ruf finally had its day ?

The CTR Yellowbird was the probably the high point for Ruf, his talented head engineer Reinhold Schmirler put together the first Porsche twin turbo engine using then state of the art techniques and a special pressure sensing version of the then new Bosch Motronic (a method still used in a similar form by Protomotive today for its monster engines).

Since RS left Ruf in the early 90s the engines never quite had that same technical superiority which RS then applied to building race winning Metzger engines.

There has never been a back to back test Ruf versus RS since the famous top speed shootout where the Yellowbird won the top speed at 211mph and the RS engined car won the acceleration 0-200kph in 11.6s

Ruf states (alledgedly) in this months 911 & P world that the RT12S is as far as he can develop the turbo engine so 685PS/860NM is it from Ruf....

For the first time since the 1988 shootout Ruf and RS went head to head in the mega 0-300kph test by Sport Auto.

The Ruf car was his latest RT12 S 685PS (fully built titanium rodded), the RS car was the Cargraphic 997tt with its 624PS RS Tuning engine completely bolt on parts including the legendary Secan intercoolers and 2 days programming on the engine dyno......

The CG car was 89kg lighter but both were 4WD. to negate the weight look at the 200 to 300kph times:

Ruf: 16.7s
CG/RS: 14.7s

It may be that the Ruf had very high gearing for its 220mph+ top speed to hinder its progress but I feel that on that warm day in September RS proved he is THE engine guru

The CG car is faster than a Konigsegg, and nearly the same as the modded Ford GT! I would imagine that the CG car is heavily underrated for power, as it is the performance outlier compared to the other cars.

Found out some more......

The engine was overhauled and now has Carrillos and 900NM but still 630hp

porsche is finally starting to take the tuner market over for themselves with gt3/2 series of cars. old days a ruf was the best you can get but now i would rather stay factory. maybe the electric car will help ruf hold an edge but i also think theyre best days are behind them

I never thought about it like that but it is a good point and I would have agreed except......

My sources tell me that Porsche engineers are working on the next GT2 engine and it is not going to be the Mezger, it is the DFI lump ! They are experiencing problems trying to make it run ~550PS reliably......... I suppose your reasoning may still ring true since tuners are going to have a hard time getting any meaningful increases from the basic turbo DFI..
