Default New 997TT Motor?

I found this link:

http://www.leftlanenews.com/wp-conte...74&idg=1&idi=6

over at 6speedonline (997TT forum) and an spy image of the upcoming facelited 997 TT. I am not trying to stir anything up and this may be old news but take a look at the engine sump - looks like a derivative of the NA 997 motor, not the split case GT1-based motor. One can also see the turbos on either side of the sump - so this seems to be real image of things to come.

I wouldn't touch that engine (or buy a 911 Turbo with one in it) with a ten-foot pole.

That pic also shows the exhaust as one long can which is also different. I fear this is in fact the wet sump downgrade...I hope I'm wrong.

No more GT1 derived professional grade engine. Instead a cheaper and weaker consumer grade M97 Turbo engine is probably to come for the MY2010 facelft. That (along with a PDK transmission capable of only 700Nm torque) could mean the end of aftermarket tuning, currently a HUGE selling point of the Turbo.

Glad I got mine when I did!

Sure does make it (GT1 Turbo) much more attractive as a long term keeper if true.

Go out to your garages right now and give your split crankcases a big 'ole hug!

There's going to be a mad scramble for the remaining stock of GT1-based motors...

There will also be a long term parts availability issue as well IMHO.
PAG and Dr. W will run away from the expense of the M64/GT1 as fast as possible.

Amazing, the internal marketing survey was convincing.....the number of Porsche owners who would actually care if their car had a M64/GT1 derived lump could have been counted on one hand.......the Porsche demographic shift during the reign of Dr. W is complete and irreversible.

Since I still see parts available for 356's I'm hoping that parts won't be hard to get for the GT1 engine. I guess we'll see.

There aren't as many 356's on the road as there are M64 derived lumps (964, 993, 996TT/GT2/GT3, 997TT/GT2/GT3), so the inventory burn rate may be a bit higher/faster.

Definitely not a short term problem.

I haven't really been following the racing angle on all this. What's the rumor with respect to the M64 motor and racing?

I thought about the parts availability issue, but I figured Porsche would continue to build and race the M64 motor and keep it available in a much smaller number of street cars to meet homologation rules (special models, etc). The M64 motor could be ordered as an uber expensive option at the consumer's pocketbook choice.

I guess Porsche feels that DI and the M97 motor are ready for racing...

Dr. W has always been somewhat less than enthusastic or caring about the racing department/programme at PAG.
They will simply race whatever they are given/allowed to.....period.

It simply doesn't make sense for them to continue to carry forward (not now, but very soon) 2 totally different engines, especially since virtually all of the marketing/demographic data suggest that the customer base:
A. doesn't care
B. wouldn't know a dry sump from a dry martini.

Don't jump to conclusions. You might be very surprised at what Porsche does with that engine. and it's not all about saving themselves a few Euro.
