if that's all he could manage with you in 4th,do what Mooty said (he's always correct) and do it from 2nd.
Keep an eye on your rearview mirror so you can see him get out at 70 MPH to figure out why his car stopped.

the way i see it there will always be a car faster than yours. i was reading the last addition of road and track magazine where they tested six cars to determine which one gets to 200 mph the fastest. the competitors were the lambo murcielago, the mercedes mc laren, bugatti veyron, ruf turbo rt12, a modded corvette, and the henessey tt viper. the winner was the viper hitting the target speed at approx. 24 sec. and the second was the bugatti reaching 200 in i think was 27 seconds. the one million dollar car was beat by a car that did not not cost even half. the ruf came in fourth place. the article said that the 997 tt was just too slow for this competition. i drive my 996 tt for what it is, a car that goes fast enough for me, looks great and handles superbly.
good luck in your next race...

The ruf was one of the only that drove to/from the track with out issue. The viper required *** washing by john every run and still had failures.
In regards to Vipers -vs- tt's, look at this vid by edmunds, the new 600hp Viper vs Z06.New Viper 0-60 3.7sec..

Hi,
First post here. Im a new 997 TT owner. This is my 2nd TT 911. Previously I had a 996 TT.
Anyhow, my neighbor owns a 97 Dodge Viper GTS and has headers+ exhaust. We both decided to take our cars out to see which one was faster. I was pretty confident that my 997 TT would take him easily. So we are side by side on the freeway, and about to do a rolling race . We are cruising at 50 and I do 3 beeps with my horn. We gun it, im in 4th gear. Anyhow his car freaken pulls and hes like 1 1/2 cars ahead of me and continues to creep away.
We repeated this 3 times with the same results. Ill tell you, those Vipers
are monsters.

Aside from my general disparagement of street racing, this thread puzzles me. Does this guy say he is in FOURTH gear at 50 mph and is surprised a car with 4 more liters of displacement is faster?
Maybe I read it wrong, and if so I apologize, but what type of freaking #### tries acceleration runs in a turbo that is two gears two high?
To compare the cars, you would need to start at about 40 mph in second (that will put you in the power band after our very short 1-2 shift). I'm guessing that 50 mph in 4th gear is about 2,000 rpm, where cars with 220 cubic inches make little power to offset their 3500 lb weight. At the same engine speed, a big block engine like a Viper is making tons more torque and hp.
So again, if I read it wrong I apologize. But, if I read it right, guys who race on the street are idiots in more ways than one. AS

It's possible!
I think it is possible the Viper pulled on the Turbo.....Last night I was racing a 1992 Ford Escort. We started at 10MPH. I was in 6th. I hit the throttle. My RPM's shot up from 1025 to 1050, but I still saw nothing but Escort tailights. We did 4 consecutive runs....he pulled on me everytime. If I had a 7th gear, I feel I definitely could have taken him.
