Bose/PCM observation...
So I tested out my Bose system after a few bashed it as sounding crappy. And you know what, they're right, but only if I play mp3 CD's. If I burn an audio CD of the same songs, the sonic range dramatically improves. I wonder in Porsche cheap-ed out and put crappy D/A for the mp3 player for the PCM. In which case, its not Bose's fault.

All content (audio, command and control) is passed over plastic fiber optic (MOST network, ~25Mb/s). Audio DAC's are contained within the amplifier, post DSP/pre output amplifier stage.
I don't quite understand what you mean by 'sonic range', but did you try turning off DSP effects, such as Centerpoint (simulated surround) and/or Audiopilot (vehicle noise cancellation)?

I use only CD's burned from iTunes. All my sounds are encoded thru the AAC at 200kb or higher sample rates. I don't consider myself anything near an audiophile, though all my home stereos/AV units are separate components only using moderate amps and pre-amps. I think the Bose system once tweaked is excellent considering the noise of the powertrain and road

There are no D/A converters in the audio path contained in the CDR23 and/or PCM.

What bitrate are the MP3s you're playing back encoded at? Higher bitrate = better quality, but bigger files so there's a tradeoff to be made. I encode all mine at 192kb/s and they sound excellent, only slightly off from pre-recorded CD quality.

Wow I guess I must be a freak.. My Bose "Plus" Superior whatever is the worst piece of crap I have had in any high end car..
I actually took my car to the dealer to diagnose why it sounded so bad when I got my car.. Dealer said "Nothing wrong with your system..They all sound like that".
My car had a 150k sticker when new.. I couldn't believe Porsche gave this system the green light.. I guess Germans don't think you should be listening to music while driving.
The sensurround is pathetic.. The Bass is horrible.. The speakers have no range whatsoever.. I have the fader almost 80% to the rear just to make it feel i'm not driving an old pick up truck with AM radio.
My wifes system in her Fiat 500 sounds way better than mine. Sad...
Systems in 20k Scions are far superior to that garbage Bose makes for Porsche. I'm used to how bad it is so now it's just normal.. I'm glad everyone else is so happy with theirs.. Like the saying goes "No Highs, No Lows.. Must be Bose....
