I'm old school, so I have to say get the 6 speed. But it's your car, do what you want, I have driven a 996TT tip and I was impressed, but just not for me.

Russ, you should also check out the search function on the bar at the top of the page. It can point you toward many lengthy threads on the subject. FWIW, I went with the manual and couldn't be happier. I too am old school and it's hard to beat the car / driver interaction you get with the manual. The hydraulic clutch in the 997tt is also very light and won't wear your leg out in traffic.

I am European and tip or automatic's were always expensive options on cars....I also felt it was for old people....BUT since I moved to the States and have been driving automatics and now a P with Tip...I don't think I would ever go back.....tooooo much traffic and the automatic's really improved (6 speeds and now even a 8 gear on the Lexus).......I also read that the tipped TT was faster than the manual one.....I think you will be happier with a tip.
